Laptop wont start up

Hi,

I bought a refurb dell n5110 about 2 weeks ago but for some reason it won't start up anymore. Basically, when i got back from work today i turned it on however the screen would not turn on at all. I turned it on/off a 2/3 times but it was still the same. I thought it may have something to do with the battery so i took out the charger cable and then removed the battery for about 30 seconds or so and then tried again but this time it wouldn't boot up at all. I have no idea how this could have happened and want to see if i can solve the problem myself before giving it in for repairs.

PS: When it did start up one of the times, i did hear a few weird beeping noises but nothing came up on the screen at all.

Any help is much appreciated, thank you in advance.

Unfortunately, the laptop won't start up at all anymore so i can't do this. As i recall though, the beep pattern was something like 3 continuous beeps. It didn't stop until i turned my laptop off. I'm not 100% sure but i think it sounded like the 3 beep pattern in this video:

Hope this helps.

I'd be happy to help you resolve this issue.

Do me a favor, and make a record of the beeps you here. These are indicators of what the problem is. Let me know exactly what the beep pattern is.

Thank You.

According to the manual and the info provided it seems like a chipset issue. Take a look on page 54 of your manual

The best thing to do would be to contact Dell support and review options.

Did you buy from dell or another source? If its only been a couple of weeks I would review any warranty or other options available.

I am sorry that it seems to be an issue like this, but hopefully we can work to get it fixed for you.

I did not buy direct from dell but the laptop was 'manufacturer refurbished' and i was told it came with 1 year warranty. How would i go about activating this?

I would just give Dell Tech Support a call directly. You should have your information located on a sticker on the bottom of your laptop.

You can also go HERE and input your servicetag/express service code or have it detected automatically. :)

Hi, thanks for the help. I got an engineer called out and he replaced my motherboard and it starts up fine now.

However, i have ran into another problem now. When i start up any game on my computer the laptop just crashes? I didnt think my gaming would be effected while the engineer was here so i didnt bother checking if they worked before he left but now i'm unable to play any games.

Are there any steps i can take to solve this problem? Or do i need to get someone called out again?

Thank you in advance.

I am glad to hear that the first issue was resolved, but not happy to hear that another issue has come up.

Let me get some clarification here so that we are all on the same page:

Does this crash happen on specific games, or all games?

Do you get any error messages?

Does it happen on browser games (like facebook games, or chrome games such as angry birds), or other games like solitaire?

Do the games only crash in full screen or in windowed mode?

Do HD videos crash?

Have you installed the drivers from the dell support site (check under the link in my sig)?

When you go into start>right click on 'computer'>'properties'>device manager (in top left)  ..... in the device manager want to see what it shows for your display adapter?

Let's start there and see where it gets us :)

Sorry for the double post but i forgot to mention i had a problem installing win 7 updates too, i hadn't used my laptop for over a week so when i turned it on i installed a few updates but when it restarted i got an 'unsuccessful install' message so i restarted and it went through the whole process agaio but it said something about reverting changes so i think it didnt install the updates at all? Again, not sure why this happend but it may help find the route cause.

Hi, sorry for the late reply, i've just come back from abroad. I will try and answer your questions as best as possible.

1) I have 2 games i used to play on it before which ran fine - it crashed on both of them

2) I get no error messages at all. At first the computer would just restart but now i get a black screen when i try and load a saved games for example or play the actual game if that makes sense.

3) At first i don't think it did but now i've been getting black screens when i try and play a browser game from like miniclips.com

4) I've only tried on full screen and yeah it always does crash

5) i tried a Blue ray movie and it ran fine aswell as HD vids from youtube.

6) I checked the website, the only outstanding driver was an audio one which i installed but still got a crash

7) It shows my gfx card: 525m and also intel HD graphics, no yellow error symbols at all

A few other problems i've come across are: When i close the laptop it does not shut down, the screen just goes off and the fan continues running pretty fast. Also, sometimes when i'm browsing, i click a link and get a black screen for like 1-2 seconds and then the page loads, not sure why this is but it may help find the route cause of the problem.

I think that's all of it. I shall await your reply

Thanks in advance.
