Diagnostics code 0146

Have XPS 420 with countless error messages

Staples said need new hard drive but I called Dell and ran the diagnostics with F12 upon start up...error message 0146. Tech said don't need new hard drive but Operating System is damaged (boot sector). Dell said need to uninstall O/S and reinstall along with drivers, etc

Does this sound right?

Hi j9rodz,

Error Code 0146 indicates hard drive issue however, sometimes the issue gets fixed by performing a clean installation of operating system.

You may refer to the link mentioned below:

Hope it helps.

Dell said boot sector seems to be corrupt and that I don't have to purchase a new hard drive but to just reinstall o/s, etc. Is the boot sector in the hard drive, i.e. how does this fix the hard drive issue
