Disable keyboard and mouse - Dell Inspiron 1420

I've got a Dell Inspiron 1420 with XP, bought in Malaysia almost 5 years ago. It was working fine till a month ago when the keyboard and touchpad started malfunctioning. I used an external keyboard and mouse to over ride the problem but from time to time, it acts as if a button on the built in keyboard is being pressed (for instance ctrl on the laptop is being held down so when I type the letter "f" on the external keyboard, I end up opening the Search tool). I don't know the internal mechanism of this laptop, but is there a way I could disable the laptop's keyboard and touchpad, and continue functioning only through the USB external keyboard and mouse? I tried uninstalling the drivers, but no go....!

Hi raptor17,

Welcome to the community.

I would like to inform you that this problem would be happening because one of the key on internal keyboard is stuck. Please remove the same and you would not face this issue with the system.

Also, if you wish to disconnect the keyboard you can check the manual link where you can find information on how you can remove keyboard cable:

To disable touchpad please check the link below which would be useful:

If you have any further queries please feel free to contact us.

Hi Sandeep,

I'm not much of a technical person, but the instructions are pretty well explained. I'll give it a try, here's hoping I won't make it any worse! Thanks all the same.

Hi Sandeep,

Did it, was able to disconnect the keyboard cable. But the problem still continues unresolved. Every now and then, its almost as if there are magic fingers dancing across the (now disconnected) keyboard. Random windows open, letters are inputted, windows utilities open up as if the shortcuts have called them up. Don't know what else to do... It's clearly hardware since I tried running it in safe mode and dual booted it with linux and it works fine except when it decides to accept input from an invisible user :S ....

Please let me know if there is another way to fix this.

Thanks & Regards,

Hi raptor17,

I appreciate the time and effort that you took to troubleshoot the issue.

Please let me know if the problem doesn't exist in the safe mode and linux as it would mean its an issue with the Windows and system might be infected with a virus or spyware.

Thanks and Regards

Hello Sandeep,

Tried re-formatting it and still no progress. Don't think its a virus. Keyboard remains disconnected and trackpad disabled, and all input is via usb keyboard an mouse. Still goes haywire as before from time to time with no warning.

What do you think I should try to do to fix it?
