Windows 8 Safe mode
My Dell 17R 5720 running Win 8 64-bit does not launch the Recovery screen when holding down the Shift key and tapping F8 during POST so I can get to safe mode. What I've found so far on the internet leads me to think this may be related to UEFI utilized instead of the usual BIOS. Any help with this?

Hi raybro,
If you want to get to Recovery Screen without booting to Windows you can try pressing the power button to shut down system(as soon as the Dell logo finishes loading).Try this(shut down system as soon as the Dell logo finishes loading) three times and on the next boot up system should automatically boot to Recovery Screen.

Welcome to the Community,
Is your system booting to Windows normally?
If you want to force boot to Advanced Recovery Screen as suggested on my previous post you will need to shut down system using the power button.Once the system completely shuts down you need to turn on system and force shutdown(using power button) as soon as system finishes loading the Dell logo screen and before loading the Windows screen.You need to follow the same steps 3 times after which system should ideally boot to the recovery option screen.

It isn't always easy to get into safe mode with Windows 8. It can take a few tries to get in.

Yep, been through all that a number of times. Easy to get into boot options using F12, so the Shift+F8 at the same point during boot should get the Advanced screen up, but it doesn't. I've tried it a number of times and the computer simply continues booting into Windows.
Any other suggestions?

There is also another way to enter Safe Mode, but this requires you to be booted into Windows. Press the Win+R key combination and type msconfig in the run box and hit enter. Switch to the boot tab, and click on the Safe Boot check box.You can also choose the type of Safe Mode you want to boot into: Once you choose your option click the ok button and restart your machine. The PC will be booted into Safe Mode automatically. If you restart you PC you will just keep getting booted into Safe Mode, to stop this open msconfig again and uncheck the Safe Boot option, then hit the ok button. Restart the computer to finish.
◦Minimal is normal safe mode.
◦Alternate Shell is safe mode with command prompt
◦Network is safe mode with networking..

Thanks for responding, but my question regards booting into safe mode without going into windows. That process works just as advertised. I'm concerned I cannot get to safe mode should Windows become unbootable for whatever reason.

Out of curiosity, is the inability to open the Advanced Screen using the commonly understood Shift+F8 associated with the implementation of UEFI on my Dell

Hi raybro,
Actually after trying in many different systems it has been found that Shift + F8 (which is commonly used to get to advanced screen) does not help in getting to the Advanced Recovery Screen.It is not due to UEFI implementation but the actual way to get Recovery screen while the system is booting to Windows is by using the power button as suggested in my previous post.
