Inspiron 2020 display issues
I have a Dell 2020 purchased in August 2012. All of a sudden the video quality changed and everything looks bright and the contrast looks way off. I have gone in and adjusted each of the settings, played with resolution, brightness, restored all of the defaults, etc. and no luck. I updated the graphics card driver and no changes. I restored the computer to an earlier time to see if one of the recent updates I performed caused the issue (Java update and microsoft updates). It looks like the HD quality has gone bad and everything is too bright and grainy. I did a system check and the only thing that came back was a aero error stating windows manager was disabled. I did the check again and it didn't show the 2nd time. Any suggestions? Seems like it should be an at home fix versus running into a shop.

I don't know if what I did will solve your problem, but I did the following:
I right clicked on a vacant place on my desktop and launched the "Graphics Properties" program and selected the "Color Enhancements" tab.
I adjusted the "Brightness" to -42; "Contrast" to 40 and "Gamma" to 0.8. While this doesn't solve the problem it does make the computer usable.
Photos and Videos are on the dark side but office programs and internet works ok.
To get the best values I had photos, office programs and internet images tiled as I adjusted these values. The values I set may not work for you.

This is what i did yesterday and it's pretty close to true color, maybe you want to give it a shot
Control panel-Display-Calibrate color
skip through to "Adjust Color Balance", from here i adjusted all three colors(Red,Green,Blue) to all the way to the left side(Black), and save
hopefully this will fix the problem for everyone

I just wanted to let you all know that the problem you are experiencing is a Dell design flaw. It is NOT a virus and it is NOT your settings. Dell simply makes inferior products. My Inspiron 2020 is currently 17 months old. Yesterday, the built in video card failed, just as you all describe, for a second time. Seven months ago, when my computer was less than a year old and still under warranty, I had it sent back to Dell to fix the exact same problem. It required the entire motherboard being replaced. I'm no longer under warranty and I'm not paying for additional service. I'm throwing this computer in the trash, which is exactly where it belongs, and I will never buy another Dell product again. I use this computer for work purposes and the amount of money I have lost while the video cards were shot and it was in the shop is far more than a new computer will cost me. A big BEWARE to anyone else who happens to own this Dell model. If you think it's just a rare glitch, it's not. It will likely happen to you too and it may very well happen again ... and again ... and again because Dell does not know how to make quality products.

Please use the following method, but follow it closely as you need to edit your registry. (It’s simple, please take your time)
1. Click on Start and type regedit at run
2. Now Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM
3. In the right details pane, create following Three DWORD (32-bit value) entry
UseMachineCheck, and set its value to 0.
Blur, and set its value to 0.
Animations, and set its value to 0.
4. Close Regedit
5. Click on Start and type CMD with administrative Privileges
6. Now type following command
Net Stop uxsms
Net Start uxsms
Above command will stop and start Desktop Window Manager Session Manager.
7. Now you can turn on Aero by right clicking on desktop-> Personalize -> Select Windows Colors

Hello everyone
I'm having the exact same problem as djmysterymix. Colors on my Inspiron One 2020 are too bright and washed, and making changes on the Intel's Graphics panel doesn't help. The computer physically includes a brightness control but it doesn't fix the washed colors.
Since I can't take a picture from the screen the best way to explain how everything looks is like the old times, when 32 bit graphic cards were forced to run at 256 colors. The projected resolution however is correct: 1600x900
The computer was almost unusable. The only way I figured to actually see what I'm writing is setting the gamma to zero.
I already reformated and installed the OS. The strange colors persisted even through the Windows 7 Installation. I'm seriously reconsidering to return this product.

I am having the exact issue that Menticol & djmystermix are having. I also found that I had to adjust the gamma to almost zero just to see the text and images but that leaves all my images very dark.
Please help.

Hello Sawdust, sorry I have bad news for you
The problem persisted even after I've reformatted and reinstalled OS and drivers. The odd colors even persisted during BIOS and OS installation. I gave up and called DELL support, after I they heard my story they agreed that the best option was simply returning the computer for warranty.
I hope yours is still covered, i had only 2 months left at the moment when I called.
This Inspiron is very disappointing. I had 3 dell laptops and 1 desktop before this one, all of them circa 2006 and all of them are working PERFECTLY. Actually I'm writing from one of them.

My computer has been out of warranty for about 3 months. I have been able to make the computer useable by changing the graphics properties enough for me to use the computer but some videos are too dark.
I have been reasonably happy with the performance of this computer except for this video issue and some of the "Free" software that came with the system. I hope it doesn't get worse.

I did what you suggested. It works pretty good, I would never had guessed. By the way I reset the "graphics Properties" to default.

Everyone:
Have you noticed the problem comes and goes. It seems to change from bad to good occasionally (once every week or two) on a restart. If it's a virus, does Dell have a solution? Note, I have run Norton 360 for the day I got the computer and it has not detected that I have a virus.

Yes, after I corrected the problem, it lasted for a while and then went back to the same thing. I just corrected it again and I'll see what happens. Dell told me that I'd have to pay for them to correct the virus problem because I'm not under warranty. I ran Avira and it found Malware and quarantined it, so I don't know what caused this.

Guys, believe me, the thing is not a software glitch. If you pay attention the abnormal colors will persist even during the BIOS or starting the computer using a Linux live CD.
The service center changed the whole motherboard and simply explained that the integrated video card was doomed.
Now, my little knowledge in TV repair says that maybe the video card wasn't the problem but the monitor circuitry. On a normal case you could repair the monitor or throw it away. But since the damn monitor is integrated on the computer, there's no hope of getting spares for it, and even worse, maybe some of its circuitry is integrated on the computer's motherboard itself.

This morning, my computer was all messed up again. I accidentally stumbled upon a fix. I updated driver software for Intel HD graphics. Start, Control Panel, System and Security, Device Mgr, Display Adapters, Intel HD Graphics, Driver, Update Driver. It worked.
