Inspiron 11 3000 Series (3137) 8gb RAM?

I'm looking to upgrade the ram on the newly released inspiron 11 3137. The laptop has one dimm slot that is also user accessible. It is currently only shipping with 2gb of ram. I realize the manual states it can support up to 4gb of ram, but has anyone tried adding a single 8gb stick?

It comes with win8 64 bit, and packs a recently released 4th gen haswell celeron. I'm thinking it may support an 8gb stick, but don't want to order without confirmation that someone has gotten it to work.

I've been running 8GB of crucial for a couple weeks now with no problems.  Is your RAM seated properly?  I've had issues with other laptops where I didn't quite get the RAM seated all the way, sometimes there would be errors, sometimes not.

Been running 8GB of Crucial for the past week.  Have twice in the past few days received two series of 4 very loud beeps (assume RAM read/write error??) while in sleep mode.  Windows started up with no problem though.  Ran the Windows memory diagnostic this morning which indicated no issues, but I went in and made sure the RAM was well seated in the slot, and ran the diagnostic again. Still no issues found. Will try a different diagnostic tool if I receive the beeps again, but 8GB, plus SSD as of yesterday, running fine otherwise with much improved performance over the stock config.

I noticed that the 1.35v ram I got is actually running at 1.28v according to CPUID. Is that what yours is running at?

I reseated mine late last week after getting the error beeps, and nothing since, although the system hasn't been in sleep mode much either.  Will surely post an update if it happens again.

Sorry if this question has been answered elsewhere, but I am having a heckuva time trying to install a SSD in place of the stock HD. I've tried the direct clone method (doesn't boot), and then the clean install of Windows 8.1 from the USB stick factory image (says that the SSD is not large enough and "needs to be at least 30GB" (SSD is 240GB). I'm stumped, and can't seem to find an answer on-line for how to do a clean install of Windows to a new SSD on this laptop.

Anyone have a step-by-step for how to do this? Most appreciated.

I just installed my 8GB RAM, I can hardly notice an improvement in the speed compare to the original 2GB  with 1 or 2 browser window.

Mine was noticbly better immediatly, but then bogged down again when all the Win 8 and then Win 8.1 updates.  Those took a couple days.  After all the download updates stopped my LT is way better.  Could it be a problem with your new RAM?

IEEE488, this is an awfully antagonistic response, just because you don't agree with someone.  It seems inappropriate for a discussion group.  You make it sounds like the original poster's point is ridiculous, but I agree with the main point.  Please keep it civil.

I am looking to buy a new laptop, and I found this forum. As a not-too-knowledgeable user, I appreciate the complaints. It gives me an idea of the consequences of having only 2GB of RAM , and what I might have to do if I were to purchase this laptop. I am looking for a fairly inexpensive laptop to do my stuff, but would only get frustrated if it worked too slowly. As long as the language is not inappropriate, can a person not express free speech without getting pounced on? Geez.

Two additional potential 8GB options:

The spec for RAM listed by Dell is for DDR3L (according to wikipedia, the "L" specifies 1.35 volt as opposed to the more typical 1.5 volt) 1600 SODIMM.  Dell specifies 2GB and 4GB modules.  Dell does not specify any 8GB modules, although curious2013 reports success with the Crucial stick he lists.  Looking around, I found that the two additional 8GB sticks listed below also appear to me to meet the specs for the Dell Inspiron 11 3137.  NB:  the specs for the items listed below specify 1.35 volt but are described by the manufacturer as "DDR3," not "DDR3L."  NB:  I actually haven't tried any of these.  Finally, RAM prices have been going up, so if you haven't bought RAM recently, you may be unpleasantly surprised (I was).

This article suggests that Patriot PSD38G1600L2S (1 8GB stick, $85 at newegg) would work and it appears to meet the Dell specs:

Also the Mushkin 972038A (1 8GB stick, $80 at newegg) also appears to meet the Dell specs.

I've had great success with my 8GB RAM, but not until after all the updates completed.

Anyone have any thoughts on upgrading to a SSD?  I'm not clear on how to re-install WIN8.1 on the new drive, would it work using the  "recovery" disk that WIN 8 lets you build?

Hey guys I had the 4 beeps also and had installed a 4gb RAM but came to find out it was the upgrade to windows 8.1.  I had called tech support and they updated the chip set and firmware for windows 8.1.....No more 4 beeps ever since!!!!

We're seeing a mismatch between hardware and software on a lot of the new low-end laptops that are coming out.  A low-spec machine needs a lightweight operating system in order to function efficiently.  Windows 8.1 is probably not that OS -- it's too cumbersome.  A Windows computer that is sluggish out of the box is a major concern as it will increasingly bog down with more apps, upgrades and security protections as time goes on.

The Inspiron 11 3000 looks like it would be a great platform for the Chrome OS.  But it's a bit of a waste to use a touch-screen machine for Chrome, I suppose.  Saucy Salamander (Ubuntu 13.10) might be the best OS for this machine.  It's too bad Dell doesn't offer the option of buying the hardware without any bundled software.  At present, in order to get optimal compatibility between hardware and software, it's necessary to pay the Microsoft Tax (at around $80), and then reinstall a more appropriate OS on your own.

i am somewhat technically challenged when it comes to computers, software, firmware, etc.  I recently purchased the Inspiron 11 3137 and wish to upgrade the RAM.   I see that two of you have successfully installed 8GB RAM.  Couple of questions

1.  Dell claims the laptop will only support 2MB and 4MB RAM.  If that is so, how would 8GB work?  How do you know that even though you installed an 8GB card, you are getting 8GB worth of memory and not 4GB of memory?  Probably dumb question.

2.  With the installation of 8GB RAM, is there any possibility you screw up the laptop as I have read that installing more RAM than is spec'd, it can actually slow down your laptop.

3.  Does Dell honor warranty if you install 8GB RAM instead of the max 4GB?

4.  What kind of things can I expect to do if I only install 4GB RAM.  Can I play simple video games?  web surf?, email? Power Point?, etc?

1. The laptop cpu fully supports 8gb - check ark.intel.com, with CPU model  number. Verified both in the bios and in windows 8.1 that I reimaged that it shows 8gb. Make sure you use Crucial Single 8GB DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) Notebook Module, CT102464BF160B available at amazon. Has 100% good reviews. I am running it now for close to 1 month and absolutely no issues.

2. Not true, in fact i have replaced the toshiba drive with a ssd and it is super fast, power on to boot is 5 or 7 seconds, from sleep is 1 or 2 seconds. Most of the newer dell laptops in the 10" or 11" size all have soldered ram on the system board that you can't upgrade. So this laptop is great that it allows both memory and drive upgrade.

3. Yes the warranty is not voided. They may ask you to try out with the stock 2gb ram so keep it just in case though.

4. 4gb with a good SSD should work fine for surfing,PowerPoint, xcel, mail?

Summary - a great touch screen laptop for under 400.

Thanks Curious.  What solid state drive did you install, where did you buy from and cost.  Any link to how I would swap out the drive?
