PERC H700 - Possible to Upgrade from 512MB to 1GB Cache?

Hi, If I have the PERC H700 (not modular, but integrated or adapter) with 512 MB cache, is it possible to upgrade that to 1 GB, or would I need a new adapter? Will the H700 recognize it, does it need a firmware upgrade, etc.? Thanks in advance.

Call Dell, LSI Logic based raid controllers are connoisseurs of memory, EXTREMELY picky.... aside from that it is a proprietary module ..

From....

Technical Guide

Dell PowerEdge RAID Controller Cards

H700 and H800

"The PERC H700 Adapter with two x4 internal mini-SAS ports supports the PCIe 2.0 x8 host interface. Cache options include standard 512 MB with BBU, 512 MB non-volatile cache, or 1 GB non-volatile cache. The PERC H700 Adapter is installed in a PCIe slot in the server. See Figure 1 for a view of the PERC H700 Integrated card (adapter version is the same with the addition of a sled for adhering to the PCIe slot connection). "

"Thanks. I was trying to avoid making that call"

The call generally is not that bad,  at least most of the time  :emotion-2:

I'm sorry - that doesn't answer my question. The question was if it already has 512 MB, can it be upgraded to 1 GB, or do you need a new card? Thanks.

No problem - thanks. How do I do the upgrade? Can I just get any DDR2 with the same form factor and speed? I can't seem to find a Dell PN for the 1 GB upgrade. Thanks.

Thanks. I was trying to avoid making that call - do reps float through here to answer these kind of questions?

Sorry, mis-read, according to the guide if you have the integrated or the adapter, they are upgradable to 1 GB, the modular h700 is NOT. Basically, if the cache ram goes into a slot, you can upgrade.

H-700 does come in 512MB or 1GB NV Cache. You can upgrade the memory but remember these memories are not standard. They are specifically designed memory and finding just the memory is not that easy.

I just thought I would post back, and let you know that I successfully upgraded a 512MB PERC H700 to 1GB for use with cachecade. No issues yet, although I've not added the 200GB SSD disk yet. FWIW I got a nice write performance increase in benchmark just by adding the 1GB memory.

How did you go about doing this? Did you replace the 512MB chip on the H700 controller with a 1GB chip?

I'm interested in finding out how you upgraded as well.

The only solution I see is to purchase another h700 card with the 1gb already in place and then swapping it out.

Thank you in advance.

But how did you get the upgraded RAM module?

I found a bunch in China and I am tempted to get one for roughly $10~15 USD a pop.  Will report back.
