U2412M, DP to PC HDMI?
I have been trying to connect my U2412M as monitor using its DP port to my new HP Envy laptop using its HDMI port with CableMatters HDMI to DP cable. Message on monitor says No DisplayPort cable. Tried another cable and two other laptops with same result. This should work, shouldn't it? In addition I've tried with and without USB cable. How can I get this working? Help please!

HDMI from a PC cannot upconvert to DP on a monitor via a simple converter cable. The standard DP to HDMI cable will not work. Those cables are made to go from a PC DP out port to a monitor HDMI in port. Your options are as follows =
PC video card HDMI out --> HDMI to HDMI cable --> HDMI to DP Active Converter --> DP to DP cable --> Monitor DP in
PC video card HDMI out --> HDMI to DVI-D cable --> Monitor DVI-D in
PC video card HDMI out --> HDMI to VGA Converter --> VGA to VGA cable --> Monitor VGA in

I had the same problem, - I was driving me crazy.... pardon the slang
If you have a graphic card and you are trying to run Digital Display from and HDMI slot on the graphic card then the only cable that will work is an HDMI - DVI-D cable, or you can run analog using a VGA card.
Running to the display port or trying a converter on your cables does not work.

This is an old thread but I want to send my thanks anyway for explaining this! I've been going around in circles trying to make sense of the problems I ran into trying to connect my laptop to my two U2412Ms . My laptop has both a HDMI and a VGA port. I bought two cables, a VGA to DP, and a HDMI to DP, and was thinking I could easily connect both monitors to the laptop with these cables. But I ended up with a 'no signal' on BOTH monitors when I attempted to connect them to the laptop using these cables! My somewhat confused but now enlightened understanding is it's not possible to convert a VGA or HDMI video adapter output into a DP 'signal' that can be consumed by the monitor. However if the direction is opposite, where the video adapter is sending DP, then it is possible to convert that video 'signal' into either HDMI or VGA, through adapter cables.
I tried a whole bunch of experiments with different cable combinations and was able to get both monitors running but it seemed like there was no logic to what worked and what didn't work.
