DVD Drive - device cannot start (code 10).

The optical drive on an Optiplex 360, [Admin NOTE: Express service code removed per TOU policy], has stopped working after upgrading the OS from XP to Windows 7 32bit.  I get an error message - device cannot start (code 10).  I checked the driver and firmware and they are current.  When l go into Device Manager the drive is shown with a problem icon.  I uninstalled the drive and then scan for new hardware; the message “Installing device driver software” pops up and then “Device driver software was not successfully installed” pops up.

I ran Dell diagnostics and it doesn’t see or check the optical drive.  I can see the drive using “msinfo32”, but it shows the status – error.

Next, I replaced the drive with a new ASUS DRW-24B1ST.  I still get all the same error messages.

How do I fix this?

Thanks -- David

Hi David,

Click my link below to the Microsoft Fix-it utility. If that doesn't work, then try the manual registry edit procedure, which is linked from the Fix-it page. That will fix this problem.

It has nothing to do with your optical drive. Well, at least you now have two! :emotion-2:
