Dell Precision M6500 video issue...

Hi,

as many already posted, I also have some crazy issues with my Precision M6500 (late 2009). Basically its display goes black and the machine does not respond to anything. While typing these words, my PC is using some funny screen resolution (like 800x600) and my Device Manager says "NVIDIA Quadro FX3800 has stopped because it has reported problems. (Code 43) ". The PC was working quite well for last 5 years. In December 2014 I finally cleaned its fans and vents... reinstalled Windows, performed all available firmware updates (including BIOS - now it's A10)... and it worked very well for like ...10 days! Now, it is almost impossible to use this machine... it doesn't look like it would overheat or something ... but the display turns black all of a sudden and the only option is to force it to shut down by pressing and holding its power button for a while.

Here are the hardware IDs of my NVIDIA Quadro FX3800:

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_061F&SUBSYS_02EF1028&REV_A2
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_061F&SUBSYS_02EF1028
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_061F&CC_030000
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_061F&CC_0300

Is there any fix for this issue? It appears like I am not the only one with exactly the same problem...

Thank you in advance,

Adam.

Try updating nVIDIA drivers from nVIDIA's website. If the driver was just updated and the problem started happening, roll back the driver

Thanks for the tip. I just did what you suggested. Unfortunately it didn't help. The only change is that now the computer actually works - I mean there is no black screen, it starts and doesn't hangs... but the screen is 800x600 and my Device Manager says "NVIDIA Quadro FX3800 has stopped because it has reported problems. (Code 43) ". I also made another try and installed NVIDIA driver from Dell support site. With that driver (nvidia_multi-device_A04_R283512) the computer is - let's say - worthless - it stops working after a minute or so (black screen and it hangs).

I was installing this package from NVIDIA: 341.21-quadro-grid-desktop-notebook-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql.exe

Thx.

Adam.

I was having the exact same issue, but think I've figured out the root problem which is a MS Windows "Optional' update that is cause conflicts with the system.  The way I came to this conclusion is I've reinstalled W7 64bit twice.

The first time I installed all updates (required and optional) not looking at what they were. (Over 300 updates).  After a couple of hours the problem started occurring again. Black screen or non-responsiveness.

The second time I only installed critical updates.  Going on 3 days now and it's still running like it did originally.  Upon doing further analysis on the optional updates, there is a nvidia graphics adapter update which I would bet is the culprit of these problems.

I'll update this thread if anything changes, but I think this is a good ole driver conflict coming from MS.

I have been used NVidia PowerMizer Manager for to tweak some Video settings.

First, backup your registry settings.

Then, you may set performance level to Medium and override the Overheat Shutdown behaviour.

For me, I have no more black screen.

Also, you may use http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html for to monitor temperature.

I have a Dell Precision m6500.

Hi, would you be able to show the values when you set the above settings and "Backup Settings". I am running Linux on my machine and am trying to specify the registry values via the appropriate configuration files. Problem is, I don't know what registry entries i need to set... .

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you ever resolve this issue?  I know it's been a while.  It is really making me crazy - well crazier!

Do you know which update it might have been, do I need to uninstall something, make a reg edit or something else.

I have a program that is called PowerMizer but it looks nothing like yours, mine has two check marks.  The link that everyone refers to has been broken for a long time, any idea how I can get a copy of the version you have?
