Function keys for Brightness control (F11, F12) do not work as expected

I purchased Dell Inspiron 5558 (with Windows 10) just two months ago (Nov 2015). Everything was working fine. However, recently I started to notice an annoying thing with the function keys F11 and F12 for reducing and increasing the brightness respectively.

Without using the Fn key (next to Windows key), if I hit F11 it was reducing the brightness and F12 was increasing the brightness earlier - as expected. Now, sometimes, the laptop monitor goes to sleep mode the moment I hit F11 or F12. I have to press the power button again to wake it up. This behavior is very off and on and not consistent.

Did any settings get changed? How to fix this? Please help.

FYI - I have not changed the BIOS settings from default which could be multimedia. I can say this because other multimedia keys in the same row behave normally (even when this strange behavior is noticed in F11 and F12).

Thanks,

Shashi

Are you pressing only F11 / F12 or are you also pressing the 'Fn' key?

If you aren't, then that may be what you need to do, If you ARE already pressing the Fn key also, then maybe you have the Fn (Function) key disabled. To enable it, press Fn + Esc

Hello Shashi,

The settings for those FN keys are handled by the Dell Quickset Utility, and later the Dell Command Configuration application, so any changes you would want to make would be done in that application.

I would suggest going into that application and seeing if you can change the settings.   Putting a system to sleep is one of the functions available so perhaps the configuration has changed.   If you want additional help please click on my Dell Todd username and send me a private message with the Dell Service Tag of the system and I'll see if I can help.   Please keep all discussions and troubleshooting here in this thread so that others, with the same questions or problems, can see what is done to resolve.

Todd

I'm having the exact same problem with the exact same model of laptop.  I've updated the BIOS and the problem still persists for me.

I'm having the same issue - I'll go to adjust the brightness to suit the room that I'm in and the system will go to sleep, requiring me to wait several seconds before I can wake it up by pressing the power button.

It's erratic and only happens occasionally.  There's no setting anywhere that's configured to put the system to sleep with the use of either of those keys.

I am having this same issue.  For some reason I cannot find the Dell Quickset Utility.  I'm wondering if there is a way I can reinstall the Quickset Utility.  When I restart the computer, the function keys will work normaly for a while, and then pressing any of them will put my computer in sleep mode.  Very frustrating.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm having a similar problem, except with the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 AMD. My laptop doesn't go to sleep, I am just unable to change the brightness through f11 and f12 keys. Anyone know solutions?

Hi Todd,

I am facing the same problem that my laptop, 5558, goes to sleep most of the times when I try to decrease the brightness of screen by pressing Fn+F11. I tried your solution, However, I could not find Dell Quickset Utility in my Windows Start Menu.

Can you please help me out ? Waiting in anticipation for your reply.

Thanks & Regards,

Piyush

Hi Todd, I'm afraid I don't think this response helps us much. Looks like almost all the replies have the same common problem - we don't see anything called Dell Quickset Utility or Command Configuration. I think the majority here have Inspiron 5558 with Windows 10 (including myself). I researched that Quickset Utility page and find no relevant information or applications for me. I tried looking for the other ones suggested but cannot find anything. I checked all the drivers available for my device and none sound similar in name or function to any of the suggested applications.

It seems clear that it is a bug for this particular model? My first Google search "pressing fn key and brightness puts my computer to sleep" came up with this thread and everyone in it has Inspiron 5558s

Can you please review again?

I found the program but it won't install since Windows 10 isn't compatible. It seems we're all stuck with the problem, until Dell finally decides to take it in charge...

I am having the same issue and can't seem to find the fix.

I have update all drivers and BIOS as Dell customer support suggested, but the issue is still there.

I have the same model and Windows 10.  I have the same problem and it is very frustrating.  I notice it happens more frequently when the computer has been asleep for awhile than when i have been using the laptop.

Did the same as others:  Updated BIOS, Drivers, etc.  Still doesn't work.

One workaround that I have found is to tap the F2 key a couple of times and then the F3 key a couple of times (volume down, volume up) and then use the F11 and F12 buttons...this works for me, but I feel like I should not have to do this.

Dell needs to fix this issues with an update.

Hi this is temporary solution:

1 Go into device manager and locate your display adapter

2 Right click on the display adapter and choose ‘Disable’:

  Temporarily disable the display adapter

The screen resolution will change but do not worry about that

3 Now, re-enable your display adapter:

Try Now: Press Fn + F10 or F11
