Dell Inspiron 3542 strange shutdown/reboot issue

Hi everyone,

About a year ago, I purchased a Dell Inspiron 3000 series 15" laptop. It's been working fine, but now it has a strange issue when shutting down or restarting.

When restarting, Windows finished its usual shutdown, and then, when normally the Dell boot logo would appear, a black screen sat for about 10 seconds, followed by the brutal sound of my hard drive spinning down like it does when I force shut down. Then the drive span back up and the reboot continued as normal. This happens about 1 in every 3 times I restart.

I also encountered a strange issue today when I shut down. I shut down as normal, left my house for a few hours, and when I came back, my laptop wouldn't turn on. Pressing the power button did nothing. I could feel heat on the underside of the laptop, like the CPU was still running. I tried holding down the power button, and pressing it to turn the laptop on again. It turned on this time. Turns out the hard drive and screen turned off, but the rest of the hardware stayed on, doing nothing.

What's going on?

Hi techhead287,

I would suggest that you run the diagnostics on the computer after the above steps by following the steps mentioned in the video below and check if there is any issue with the hardware on your system.

Also, I would suggest you to reinstall the Video card driver on the system to fix the issue with the shutdown.

Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the video card driver from Video section onto the system and install it.

Also, you may try shutting down the system by following the steps below.

Start > Run > type ‘cmd’ and in the command prompt box type "shutdown -s"

In addition, I would suggest you to not to keep the AC adapter connected to the system all the time.

Please let me know if this helps.

for the battery shut down issue

go to control panel, uninstall a program

uninstall

intel rapid storage

intel security assist

intel engine management

also for ur booting problem, i would go to bios setting and set to original default. i am not sure if this will help ur hard drive, but, it is worth a try

Hi,

I ran a diagnostic. No problems.

Reinstalled video card driver, no difference.

Ran shutdown -s, no difference.

Shouldn't have AC adapter connected all the time? I'll keep that in mind.

Thanks for replying though!

Hi,

I was thinking those Intel apps were the culprit! I noticed that these issues only started cropping up after those were installed by the chipset drivers (from the Dell site mind you) I downloaded after I fresh installed Windows.

I'll try uninstalling them and see if the issues stop.

Hi Tech,

I would suggest you to try flashing the BIOS on the system. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the operating system, and then download the BIOS from the BIOS section onto the system and install it.

Also, I would suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the video card driver from Dell website as these drivers are tested on the Dell system. Please follow the steps mentioned below to uninstall the video card.

  1. Open the charms bar by moving the mouse to right top corner of the screen and in the search box, Start typing devmgmt.msc and then press enter.

  2. Select the Display adapters listed and right click on it.

  3. Now select properties.

  4. In the properties window, under Driver tab, click on Uninstall button.

  5. Check “Delete the driver software for this device.”

  6. You want to delete the driver click OK.

After the uninstall finishes restart the system. Then reinstall the Intel video card driver first and then Nvidia card driver (If system is configured with discrete video card) on the system for issue resolution. Please enter your service tag # on the link above, select the OS, then download the video card drivers from Video section onto the system and install it.
