S2716DG, EVGA 680 GTX, Unable to select 144Hz, only 120Hz?

I just received my new S2716DG and was excited to get things running.

I connected it with the included display port cable and updated my nvidia drivers to the most recent version.

When I go into both Windows & Nvidia control panel, I'm able to only select 120 HZ as my max refresh rate. I've gone through all lower resolutions (I'm at the highest) and no opportunity is given to select 144hz.

For context I'm using an EVGA 680 GTX.

Is this a known issue? Is it a driver issue? Is there a solution?

Someone suggested create a custom resolution and setting the refresh rate to 144hz - would this be a temp. fix?

I too am only achieving 120hz.  Using Gigabyte GTX 770 4 gig with display port.  Latest Nvidia drivers G-Sync enabled.

Ya I think I've seen this issue enough (not just here on this thread) that we need an answer from Dell.

I'm out of town so can't test it with a different display port cable - has anyone tried it with one that didn't come in the box?

Dell friends - anything definitive from your end yet? I think we can rule out it being this many defective monitors (I hope at least).

Just got mine today, same 1440P@120hz max setting over display port issue.

PC is running a GTX 770 (2GB.)

Tried everything I can think of, even creating a custom 144hz resolution setting, it will immediately revert to 120hz

I really liked the monitor but mine seemed to just die out of no where a couple days ago (it literally would not turn on no matter what).

I decided to return it and not request an exchange, it was too much hassle given the price tag and the fact that this issue (not being able to achieve 144hz) has no answer from Dell.

Maybe in the future I'll consider getting it again at a good price but for now I'm going to stay away.

^ Sorry your monitor broke.

FWIW, I just upgraded from a GTX 770 to a 980.

144hz mode now works where my 770 would only do 120hz.

Pretty sure the problem is that the 680/770 cards just don't support 1440p @ 144hz over displayport for whatever reason.

I'm also getting only up to 120hz. Gigabyte Windforce GTX 770 2GB, Windows 8.1

Same problem...

using Asus GTX770-DC2, Windows 10, GeForce v361.75

No option to select 144Hz in the nvidia controls. Can you guys create a custom resolution with 2560x1440@144hz and test it. The test passed on my system, but still no option to select the previously tested 144hz

I've had the same experience, no option to select 144 hz, trying a custom resolution tests fine, but the option never gets added to actually allow it. Also the CRU may not be recognized by games in full screen mode.

I have a EVGA 660ti.  The product page claims to support 240 hz so we'll see. I'm going to try a few different cables, perhaps the cable they sent me ***, although it appeared to be manufactured well.

Hmm this is strange. I've been through one PG278Q which did not have this issue with my gtx 670 even though its the same panel, i've also had the PG279Q which had the same issue as this one, no go with 144hz, stuck at 120hz.

What gives? is it some form of security feature? I'd love to be able to use 144hz with my gtx 670 gpu as it is a bad time to buy a new gpu.

Yeah I'm at a loss.   I tried different displayport cables without any luck. I contacted EVGA, who said my video card absolutely supports 144 hz over DisplayPort, and recommended I contact Dell, so I did. Unfortunately this ended up in a dark black hole. Dell struggled to get me with the right support group, even had trouble with simply transferring me. After expressing frustration, a Dell Support engineer who was given the call incorrectly said he'd try to assist even though his department does not typically deal with consumer line options. He basically said he thought it should work and needs to get me over to the 'right' department. I was moved around 5-6 times, and finally I reached someone who said they 'could' help. Unfortunately, I didn't receive any assistance. The Dell client rep was not knowledgeable, and didn't even know this model could support 144 hz. I ended up walking her through how to do the troubleshooting (which I had already done). She escalated up to her boss, whom also needed assistance. They originally stated that the monitor did not support 144 HZ , which was obviously incorrect. After 4+ escalations, I was told my video card does not support  144hz, although the manufacturer of the card said that it does. I spent a good 6-8 hours wasting my time and waiting to hear the wrong answer, which was extremely frustrating.

Well i have a benq xl2420z that runs perfectly fine at 144hz  with my current gpu, so it's obviously not the problem. Maybe it's related to the g-sync module.

@thevoodoo  This sort of makes sense, and I read this elsewhere. However, at 1920x1080@144hz, it should work, and I'm guessing it doesn't for you (it didn't for me). In fact, no matter how low I put the resolution I could not not get the 144hz to display, unless it's just some sort of hardcoded limit no matter what resolution.

Does this mean that we will need at least a gtx 980 to enable 144hz or wil any gtx 9xx suffice?

Has anyone figured out why none of us can achieve a 144hz refresh rate? A gtx 770 can absolutely support 144hz. Would it be pointless to get a replacement monitor?

The 2560x1440@144Hz resolution would require a pixel clock of 586Mhz. The GeForce GTX 770 max pixel clock is 540Mhz. You'll need a GTX 980 class GPU, which has a higher pixel clock, in order to support the 2560x1440@144hz resolution.
