Dell hooked me up... warranty is up but they still fixed my SmartStep.

I got it picked up on Monday afternoon (approx 4:30PM).  I got it back on Wednesday

They updated the BIOS, replaced the keyboard and... REPLACED THE HEATSINK!!!

All this and my warranty expired in January.  So, I can't say enough good things about Dell.  They really stepped up, admitted to the SmartStep's problem and fixed it in a VERY quick timeframe.

Thanks Dell

10 to 1 one you see overheating problems again within months.

Well... they didn't say it was the motherboard.  They didn't say it was the memory or the hard drive.

They admitted it was an overheating problem.  The keyboard fix was probably just the removal of the film (which has been proven is a pretty good fix w/making the unit cooler)... so that's great.  They also cleaned it out and "fixed" the heatsink... don't know exactly what that was but it's better than nothing.

So, considering my warranty was up, they could have just told me "tough... we're not doing anything for you."  But they didn't do that.  So I say "Good going Dell."  Besides the overheating problem (which didn't start until about a year after I had the computer) I can honestly say that I've been thrilled with this laptop... I think it works great.

You got lucky, I just talked to tech support for 2 hours and still got no where. They had me update bios and check all the components, but didn't seem to know anything about the thermal problems. I asked if the was a differnt keyboad it need for better air flow, but he didn't know squat. He ended up requesting I send it in so a new fan can be put in. We'll see what it comes back with. I think it will have the same problems

I specifically referenced this board and told him I knew about the heating problems... he then went and checked it out and then came back and acknowledged it.  So, you may want to request a supervisor or something like that.

Good luck with the new fan... I'm sure it can't hurt.
