Old chipsets do not support the latest INTEL RST. 9.6 is required for AHCI advanced format drives.
10.1 may be max version
Intel RST replaces Intel Matrix Storage Manager 8.9. HOWEVER you cannot update to your hearts content from 7 to 8 to 9 to 10 to 11 to 12 to 13,14 etc. As the drivers and chipsets get newer the older ICH5 6 7 8 9 etc are dropped from support.

Version 9.6.0.1014 may be the max for your motherboard

Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) version 9.6 and newer supports 4k sector disks if the device supports 512 byte emulation (512e). Intel® RST does not support 4k native sector size devices.
What happens if I try to use an older version of the driver?
If you try to install the operating system on a 512e disk with a driver older than Intel® RST version 9.6, the install process might not complete. This driver is not validated with your XPS and may not work at all. There will be ZERO support for this if its not working. INSTALLING THIS DRIVER if its not working can lead to 100 percent loss of all data. Do so at your own RISK. Installing a version Higher than the supported chipset does the same thing. All Raid Data lost restart from zero.

I don't pretend to really understand your answer. The intel update utility is offering me Intel Chipset Device Software (INF Undate utility -exe only) version 10.1.1.14 There's nothing in the manual to explain it. Dell system detect offer me XPS-8700_Chipset_Driver_VJ54R_WN32_11.0.0.1153_A00.EXE I've tried installing this and restarting before and nothing seems to happen. To be honest my PC has this SSD in it and I've not idea what it does and why I would need it.

The XPS 8700 has quite a lot newer chipset and more than 4 drivers required.
USB3 and the 87 series are not native to windows 7 or 8 or 10. The oldest RST driver is 12.XX for the 8700 so 10.1.1.14 would not recognize anything. HOWEVER The AMT and CHIPSET drivers as well as the USB3 Drivers are NOT optional. You did not say which dell you had in the original post. There IS NO ONE SIZE FITS ALL RST for ALL DELLS ALL MODEL YEARS.
