Advice needed on OS upgrade

Hi. I have an Inspiron 5759 running Win 10 Home 64 bit..

I have an ISO of Windows 10 Education from Dreamspark.

I'm in two minds and would appreciate some advice.

On the one hand, I'd like to completely reformat the hard drive and perform a clean install of Win 10 Education. The downside to this is:

  • I'm not sure what Dell has put on the partitions, would I lose some functionality? For example, Dell hardware diag?

  • I would have to reinstall a lot of software.

But my instincts are still telling me this is the best way to go. Is there any way to keep the extra Dell programs on the other partitions?

The alternative to a clean install is an upgrade, has anyone done this? What's your take, clean vs upgrade?

ALI1EAR ,

You can install the Windows 10 Education ISO. You can keep the Dell Diagnostic partition and delete the others. Yes, you will need to reinstall the software in the system. You will also need to reinstall all the drivers for the hardware as well.

You could also look into dual booting the 2 versions of Windows 10. May be easier on you with this option.

Thank you for your reply.

I decided to just do an upgrade from Home to Education.

I have had no problems since doing the upgrade one month ago.

At some point in the future I probably will do a clean install since I believe that there is usually a noticeable performance gain, maybe after a year or two of installing all sorts of applications.

It would be great if someone posted a 'step by step' guide for a clean install, showing how to keep the valuable Dell partitions and applications.
