OS install notes:
There's an updated storage driver (IRST F6) to include PCIE support. ( The one you have to install for Windows to see the drive during installation ) :
Also see: Installing Windows 7 on a SKYLAKE system using MDT: http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/HOW11493/en
Obtaining an ISO image:
For some systems you can obtain Dell operating system images through Dell Hosted image
Note: not all systems and service tags will have an image available for download.
Note: Even though Dell Hosted Images have USB3 drivers slip streamed in, they may not include the IRST driver at this time. ( some may know this at the F6 driver ). As a result you may need to install the IRST driver manually during the Windows install process.
Dell is currently working to add the IRST driver to the Dell Hosted Images. No ETA on when this will happen at this time.

Can anyone help me find part no. 1X2MT thermal cover for the Dell Latitude E5470? I've tried calling customer service. But all they tell me is that the part is not available?

@ I-Way Vagabond
I see them at www.waresphere.com/.../m-2-pci-e-ssd-end-bracket-cover-dell-latitude-e5470-x3yr8-1x2mt.html
but you have to buy a X3YR8 bracket at the same time... also, it won't ship until after they're done celebrating arrival of the year of the rooster.

Sorry I'm just seeing this post. On my XPS I had it originally in RAID. It was just the other day I switched to AHCI and set the controller to Samsung and used there drivers. Before it was all MS drivers and the Samsung Magician wouldn't detect it. Honestly the XPS in RAID with the MS drivers worked fine. The reason I switched was due to seeing slightly better benchmark scores with the Samsung drivers and controllers.
As for the e7470 (which I'm on right now) I still haven't put in the 512gb 950 pro. Still in my desk drawer. I think I'm just going to open it up in an hour or two and go for it. Justin @Dell said that he can confirm that the M.2 NVMe @ 2lanes still out performs any 2.5 SATA.
So I just before jumping on here made a Bootable Clean Install from the creation tool, and I'm gonna swap the SanDisk x400 128gb with the, (now collecting dust) Samsung 950 pro 512gb.
I just hope it goes smooth like the XPS. Im not the best IT guy.

Hi DELL-Justin C,
very nice and comprehensive overview and Q&A
Could you please update the article with regard to the Latitude E5580?
I just bought one (currently on it's way from China) and would like to replace the original 500GB HDD with a 512GB Samsung 960 PRO NVMe M.2 SSD - which end bracket / thermal cover and screws will I need?
Could you also please advise where to get these in Europe (preferrably Germany) including the Dell part numbers?
Thanky you for your support!
Best regards
Markus

Just a guess, but I'd wager the same parts the 5570 takes would fit the 5580 (I couldn't find that model on the USA support site)...
i.e. X3YR8 bracket and 1X2MT thermal cover.
ebay.com/itm/332103428021 (more-than 10 available; includes screws, too)
ballicom.co.uk/manufacturers/dell.104439/ (first 2 parts on that page - no pictures there)
Did not find a seller in DE... that doesn't mean there are none; I went through only the first 2 (out of 5) pages of results in google.

Darr.darr,
thank you for your feedback and the links :emotion-1:. According to my information, the 5580 is the 5570 update with kaby lake architecture. Please see the Dell homepage for more information:
http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/latitude-15-5580-laptop/pd?ref=PD_Family
I had a look at the 5570 parts and they seem to differ to what is used in the 5580 (source: Dell Latitude 5580 Owner's Manual). The SSD clip shown here looks different, that's why I was asking...
http://www.dell.com/support/manuals/us/en/04/latitude-15-5580-laptop/Late5580_OM_Pub/Removing-the-M2-Solid-State-Drive-(SSD)?guid=GUID-555D4A72-1F25-4555-B703-7D88D2C15163&lang=en-us
I might have to give Dell tech support a call....
Thank you and best regards
Markus

My new XPS 13 9365 2-in-1 came with the Toshiba M.2 PCIe drive configured as a SATA drive. If there is some reason, other than the Bios Update situation, I need to know it.
I just put a Samsung 960 Pro in as a PCIe drive and if there is a problem, such as heat, I need to remove it.
Thanks.

@Saltgrass,
I think that's just the way the controller shows up. The drive should be running on PCIE lanes. You'll be able to see them using HWiNFO64:
www.hwinfo.com/download.php
I think you'll see 4 lanes but I could be wrong.

Thanks for the response, I currently have a PCIe drive installed, but it was configured as SATA. By that I mean the SATA controller was set as RAID and the drive showed on the SATA controller, not the NVMe controller.
I just wondered why it had been configured that way.

@Saltgrass,
The XPS 9365 does support NVME. I just haven't confirmed how many lanes yet. Parts required are listed below:
4HP13 - Thermal plate
2x JPRFM - M1.6x2.5 screws ( holds the thermal plate and M.2 drive down )

I don't like to mess with the original drive but it would be shown as the Samsung drive is. As you can seem the Samsung is sitting on the NVMe controller where the Toshiba was on the SATA controller.

@Community,
I've updated the original post to include newer models. Notes:
-added Dell drive classification graph ( so that when you go to Dell.com and see drive 'class 40' for example, you'll know what that is )
-added 7520/7720 - no physical drive connection changes as compared with 7510 and 7710
-Dell added in class 50 drives as options during purchase for various newer models ( not noted in the post just throwing this out there )
-Precision 3520, Latitude E5280, E5480, E5580: M.2 drive upgrade part numbers are different from 3510, Latitude E5270, E5470 and E5570
-Added XPS 9360 - no physical drive connection changes as compared with 9350
-Added XPS 13 9365 section
-Latitude 5480 has 4 lanes of support with H processor. That's up 2 lanes from the Latitude E5470 which had 2 lanes of support with H processor
-Latitude 7280 and 7480 have different parts number from the E7270, E7470
-Precision 5520, XPS 9560: M.2 drive upgrade part numbers are not different from Precision 5510, XPS 9550
-Precision 3520, Latitude E5280, E5480, E5580 available with a 2nd drive, but it's a cache only drive
