OS install notes:
There's an updated storage driver (IRST F6) to include PCIE support. ( The one you have to install for Windows to see the drive during installation ) :
Also see: Installing Windows 7 on a SKYLAKE system using MDT: http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/HOW11493/en
Obtaining an ISO image:
For some systems you can obtain Dell operating system images through Dell Hosted image
Note: not all systems and service tags will have an image available for download.
Note: Even though Dell Hosted Images have USB3 drivers slip streamed in, they may not include the IRST driver at this time. ( some may know this at the F6 driver ). As a result you may need to install the IRST driver manually during the Windows install process.
Dell is currently working to add the IRST driver to the Dell Hosted Images. No ETA on when this will happen at this time.

@markus15
Have you had succes in using Samsung EVO 960 on your E5580? If so, have your VGA port still working? I'm questioning that cause my Latitude 5480 started to fail VGA output after I installed a EVO 960 on it =(
Thanks a lot for any information..

Thank you for your comprehensive review and continued efforts to answer additional questions posted to this thread!
To extend these efforts, would it be possible to add information/instructions for the Optiplex 3050/5050/7050? They all seem to have a PCI-E M.2 slot, but I haven't found any instructions on how to make an nvme drive bootable under them like you provided for the 5040/7040.
Thank you for your help!

Hello Justin,
I have a question about Dell 5480 "H" processor and Dell 7480 "U" processor, do these board supports PCIe 2.0 / 3.0 with x4/x2 lanes.
As per your post I do know the lanes but want to confirm the PCIe version.
Regards,
BJ

@OlderFogie,
I just found this document. www.dell.com/.../optane-enabled-system-may-not-boot-when-a-hard-drive-or-optane-device-fails
Does that help you out? I'm still working on the lanes information. My firm assumption for now is that the ports are 4X on those models.

Mr Justin C, Dell Tech Support, Re your post of 19 Sept 2016 upgrades.
Getting ready upgrade my XPS L702X with Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5 SATA III Internal SSD. Apppreciate any new guidelines you might advise since 2016. Many Thanks

@Justin
I recently bought a Dell 5480 with Dell PCIe NVMe drive 256gb. Thank you for your suggestion.
I would appreciate if you can tell me if I have a x4 lanes or x2 lanes as I am planning for an upgrade to a bigger hard drive. My processor is i7 7820HQ 2.9GHz.
Do you think it will support x4 lanes?
Regards,
