Someone on ExpertsExchange found the solution: you need to check the box in the "State" column on the System->Alerts->Email Alert Settings page for the destination email address line(s).  "Enabled" would be a much better label for that column, as "state" meant nothing to me...

Hello

I was able to configure iDRAC's Email Alert Settings and successfully did a Test E-Mail [Send]

Did you receive the test email at the address specified?

Is it possible a 10 second loss of power on one supply is not severe enough to trigger a true alert?

You should receive an alert. If it is in the alert log then it should have sent an alert if set up correctly. Make sure that the email address destination is also checked on the email pane.

Thanks

Yes, I received the TEST email at the address I configured under Email Alert Settings.  But no email came when I unplugged one of the two power supplies.  As I mentioned earlier, unplugging the power supply did cause critical events to show in the log.  Baffling...  Then again, if you search iDRAC topics, you'll find people have all sorts of problems just getting it configured (I did too).

Not all alerts are enabled per default for the different protocols like: mail, SNMP, IPMI, ws-man, etc. Go through the warningsand alerts and enable everything you need.

Hi Martijn,

Hmmm, every iDRAC6 system I configured has all alerts enabled.  Maybe you're using different versions?  I've attached a screen shot of what the default alerts screen shows.  Plus, and it's a bit murky, but there's a spot on that page up top that says:

Note: Enable/Disable all Platform Event Filter (PEF) trap and email alerts. Trap alerts are controlled by the combination of global Enable Platform Event Filter Alerts and individual filter alerts below. Email alerts are controlled by the global Enable Platform Event Filter Alerts checkbox alone.

So that fact that I have a bullet next to the Enable Platform Event Filter Alerts checkbox, in my mind, means ALL the listed alert types should generate an email.  Agreed?

I struggled for an hour or two with the settings to get the TEST email to work, and now I run into this roadblock :)  Never easy in Dell world :)

Whenever I send a test email within the iDRAC6 GUI, I see the email arrive in the SMTP Receive log.  But when I tried to force an alert to occur on 1/13 (by unplugging power supply), I see no entry in the SMTP Receive log on my SBS 2008 server.  The SMTP Send log is of no use, as it does not log internal emails.  I have only a single Send Connector defined under Hub Transport in Exchange Console, and it uses a Smart Host that points to GoDaddy.com's SMTP servers.  Is there some way to log emails that SBS/Exchange sent internally?

Sorry you are correct, it has been a while since a looked at an iDRAC 6.

What I described is how it works on iDRAC 7 and 8.
Than I'm out of bright ideas at this moment. I would suggest to call our support and raise a ticket for this issue.

I don't currently have any servers under warranty or support contracts - will Dell still take on a call about this?

You can try but to be honest I don't think so.

I wonder what other sort of alert I can trick my server into generating?  Power supply seemed the easiest.  Any other ones?

Anybody ever received a real email hardware alert from a DRAC/iDRAC?
