Alienware M17xR4 Charging issue
Hello. I have an AlienWare M17xR4 laptop that I got for graduation around may of 2013. It has Windows 7 on it, and for the most part works just fine. However, lately I have had a problem with it charging. When not charging, the little alien head stays white, and whilst charging, goes from red to white. Lately, after a while, it will stay a constant red and will say it is charging, is connected to AC power, yet when I look in the bottom right hand corner it says it isn't plugged in and the battery drains normally. Unplugging and replugging it in doesn't help, and unless I shut down my computer, the battery will continue to drain. Any help?

Hi Valthonis,
Please check if the system turns on only with the Ac adapter. Also check if the battery and Ac adapter is listed in the BIOS. Tap F2 at startup to open BIOS, check what is listed for Ac adapter type, next navigate to ‘Advanced’ tab and check what is listed for Battery health.

Thank you for getting back to me so soon Sujatha.
-My system did turn on with only the AC power inserted (I removed the battery for said test). When booting up the machine, it tends to recognize being plugged in, and the battery does charge. Its only after about 15 minutes of charging that it stops actually charging, but continues to say it does.
-My AC adapter type is listed as 180W, it is the one that came with the machine.
-The battery health states "This battery is performing normally"
My dad told me that it might be the ac adapter, or the computer plug, as it wont even recognize the AC charger as being connected unless it is pulled slightly to the side while plugged in, but the fact that later on when it still recognizes that it's plugged in and is running on AC power when it is really using up the batter is what I am confused about. Just trying to put forth as much information as possible to help in your diagnoses :)

Hi Valthonis,
Thank you for the update. Since the charger gets connected when pulled slightly, I suspect it is the port issue. However you may first try with a known good ac adapter. If the issue persists even with the same, consider replacing the motherboard. Please click on the link below to check the warranty of the system.
