Alienware Area 51, Win10, new problems and one solution.

Installed Win10 successfully, but had to update my nVidia drivers.  I found a problem with shutting down, though:  After clicking on Start Menu/Power/Shut Down (or Restart), the shut-down routine seemed to go really fast, but after the screen was dark except for the monitor message waiting for me to turn off the power to the computer, the hard-drive indicator and the alien-head light kept lighting and dimming, but never went out.  Not sure what that meant but I did find a solution:

Press the SHIFT key and hold it down while clicking on Shut Down.  The computer appears to shut down the way it did with Win7.

Another problem, though:  Sometimes when the computer starts,  the network logo in the task bar has a red X on it, and I have no online access. I get the message to the effect that "The network cable is disconnected."  After a reboot, this gets fixed. Any ideas of how to proeceed?

Hi,

Just to confirm, do you have the Alienware Area 51 R1 or R2?

Neither!  I've got the 2009 version of the Alienware Area 51, with no further number or letter designating it.  Incidentally, it is using the Alienware A11 bios.

Hi,

Unfortunately, according to the policy document, the Area 51 desktop system will not be supported on Windows 10. Some users have successfully installed Windows 10 on these non-supported systems. But they did all the driver investigation (example = installing 7/8/8.1 drivers) to force it to work. Dell does not have the resources to do this on non-supported systems.

You should probably refer to your machine as Area51-R1.

Try turning off Fast-Startup in Win-10.

In my opinion, the Alienware desktop naming can be confusing! For your notes for future postings.

Area51-R1 (2009, Windows 7)
Area51-R2 (2014, Windows 7/8.1/10)

Aurora-R1 (2009, Windows 7)
Aurora-R2 (2010, Windows 7)
Aurora-R3 (2011, Windows 7)
Aurora-R4 (2012 Windows 7/8/8.1/10)

X51-R1 (2012, Windows 7/8/10)
X51-R2 (2013, Windows 7/8/8.1/10)
X51-R3 (2015, Windows 8.1/10)
