XPS 8700, will not upgrade to Windows 10 1803 (April Update)

XPS 8700, Core i7, GeForce GT-720 will not upgrade to 1803. It downloads, installs and immediately reverts back to 1709. I am aware that the XPS 8700 is not listed on the Dell April Update compatibility document but was hoping someone had any tips to get around this. I disconnected all external devices except mouse/keyboard, still no joy. Next step will probably be to crack it open and tear out the video, networking items, etc. but thought someone might save me the effort. I have seen others report success with their 8700s so it's got to be possible. Dell helpfully recommends buying a new machine (thanks, Dell).

Thanks in advance.

There is some older hardware that has been excluded from reports on the www.tenforums.com   You may want to post on that forum and see what they say.

It's not a Dell problem, but you can check this thread for tips.

https://www.dell.com/community/Alienware-Desktops/Aurora-R7-update-problem/td-p/6133384

And a long-shot fix ... but I've seen Windows-10 updates weaken or kill old spinning drives. The HDD-SMART kicks-in so drive still barely work.

Dropping-in a SSD works wonders and fixes it.

This machine has had an SSD boot drive since day one. My problem is not like the one (update never finishes) in the thread you posted.

Thanks for responding.

1. Good

2. Doesn't matter. You have a Windows-Update problem (a Microsoft related problem).

I was trying to show you the DISM and SFC lines. If those or the Windows Troubleshooter don't help, I think your options are:

1. Overlay/Upgrade install of Windows (helps if Installer is a newer milestone release you don't have yet).
2. Clean Install of Windows
3. Windows Reset-This-PC (maybe, never tried it)

Every machine I have ever had this issue with can be resolved in one of 2 ways.  I have started making clean copies of the 1803 DVD burned at 4X or 8x or 16x max for my clients because this is not an isolated incident.

IMHO Microsoft should provide a commercially stamped DVD of 1803 to anyone that asks for it.

1.  Clean install starting with 1803 DVD.

2.  Upgrade Install starting with 1803 DVD.

Upgrading Online or via DVD will create a Windows.old directory that needs to be removed by doing advanced disk cleanup.

1 & 2 = A little extreme for initial attempts, but I generally agree with procedures. However, as for media ... the USB Flash Drive created with microsoft.com Media Creation Tool works fine for me (even on older machines).

3. True. Or, I'm pretty sure if you just wait 30 days (to make sure you don't need it) ... it deletes itself.
