Drives for PowerEdge T420 - PERC H710P card

We have a Dell PowerEdge T420 with a PERC H710P card.  It contains Seagate ST9300605SS drives.   One started showing a 'predictive failure' so we purchased another one from Amazon that was exact same make and model.   We stuck it in the server and open manage would not let us add it to the RAID array.   Within Open Manage i noticed 2 differences between the new one and the other 5. First it said the new one was Revision CS05 and the other 5 were Revision CS08 and under 'Certified' the new one said 'No' and the other 5 all said 'Yes'.

We called Dell and they wanted $500 for a new drive and the one we purchased was under $100 but it was same model number and brand.

So my questions are why didn't our drive work and is there a difference between the Dell drive and one purchased outside of Dell?

thanks

Hello

we purchased another one from Amazon that was exact same make and model.

That is not the same drive we sell.

Our hard drives have Dell firmware on them. If you buy the same model that is not a Dell drive then it will not be a Dell hard drive with Dell firmware. We design, test, and update our controllers with our hard drives running our firmware. We do not test or validate 3rd party hard drives to function with our RAID controllers. Testing, validation, and support of 3rd party drives will be your responsibility if you choose to use them.

The H710 does not block the use of 3rd party drives, but it is designed to always show an error when a non-certified drive is installed. If the drive does not function then it is either a physical failure of the drive or a firmware communication issue.

Thanks

Dell certified drives have firmware that has been tuned to match the requirements of the PERC controllers. You CAN buy generic/retail versions of the exact same model of the drive that has generic firmware, which often does not work.

Don't buy them from Dell. Get a Dell part number (NOT THE DRIVE MANUFACTURER'S PART/MODEL NUMBER) and buy from a reseller/supplier. Exact same certified drive, but less than half the cost. It doesn't matter WHERE you buy it, it matters WHAT you buy.

Hi Daniel,

Are you able to tell a list of "Dell part number" that fits T420 with H710Adapter controller?

My T420 has 4 hard drives: Dell 600GB, 15k rpm, nlsas, 512n, 3.5in, 6gbps, hot-plug.

Do you think "Dell 4/2/1TB 7.2K RPM NLSAS 512n 3.5in Hot-plug Hard Drive, CusKit" will fit my T420 with "Dell part number" like 400-ALOB, 400-ALNY, 400-ALQZ?

Thanks
