Aurora R7, external drive preventing startup
Loving my new R7, save one issue, external hard drive, any type, no matter which USB port I use, prevents startup from continuing. I have to force shut-down my R7, unplug the external drive, power up again, and then it starts normally. Once I'm at the desktop, I can then plug in the external drive and it sees it just fine. I just can't restart, or startup if the external hard drive is already plugged in and on. I tried looking at the Boot Priority F2 but I don't understand what IPV4 and IPV6 are so I didn't do anything there.

Hi @househe,
It seems that the system is trying to boot from the external disk when it is connected and that is why it does not boot.
Enter the BIOS> Boot > Boot option priorities: Select Windows Boot Manager as Boot option number #1.

I just restarted, as you suggested, with the external drive plugged into one of the R7's USB 2.0 ports and the computer starts up as it should now. While that does solve the startup problem, it's too bad it comes at the price of not being able to use any of the USB 3.0 ports with an external drive during startup. This certainly can't be normal, right?

Wow! That is crazy. So no one on the planet that has an external hard drive connected to a USB 3 port on an Alienware R7 can get a proper startup unless they plug it into a USB 2 port? That is unfortunate. I'll try it and see if it happens to me too. Thanks for the heads-up.

I have another computer that does this same thing. If the drive is attached to the USB 3.x connection, the computer does not start but if it is attached to a USB 2.x connection, all is well.

OK, I just hit F2 and checked what you said and Boot Option #1 already has Windows Boot Manager as the default choice. Boot Option #2 says Onboard NIC (IPV6) and Boot Option 3 says Onboards NIC (IPV4). Any other suggestions?

I have a WD USB-3.0 HDD plugged into my Aurora-R6, and it boots fine. It's plugged into a back-panel USB-3.0 port.

I realize this is an old thread, but was a solution identified? Started using my sons Alienware after he upgraded andm i'm having the same issues.

Yes, type F2 on startup, go to boot options, select the "enable USB support" tab, and then choose "disabled." Save and exit.
