Upgrade HBA firmware on ESXi 4.1 host

Hey guys,

I have a new HP DL580 G5 box and we are going to install ESXi 4.1 on it, however, i discover that there is no console on ESXi OS but i want to upgrade the emulex Lpe1500 hba card on the box.

Do you have any idea how to do it?

Thanks a lot.

Kenny,

One of the methods that Emulex suggests is to boot to DOS via boot disk.  These are readily available online if you search google for "boot disk".  Check the link below for a document showing upgrade options for other HBA adapters.  It has a section on booting into dos and running "lp6util" to do an hba upgrade.

Thanks clinton, i am trying to upgrade the firmware of the emulex LPe1150 to the latest one which is 2.80a4, and i find out that there is no lp6dutil attached in the package.

As i read from HP website, the lp6dtuil is no longer support after firmware 2.70, so, is this method still valid??

Kenny,

Check this page out from Emulex for the EMC approved adapters.  At the bottom there is a section for offline utilies.  This should cover what you're looking for.

Hi Clinton,

Thanks for the info you provided, i guess DOS offline utility will be the one that i am looking for. First of all, i will boot up the ESXi host using DOS boot floopy and then i will use this DOS offline utility to upgrade the firmware. Hope this works, thanks.
