Your problem with the BDC is the Broadcom requires SP3 to work properly, but the BDC must access the network to synch with the PDC before you can install service packs.
Put an intel pro 100 Nic in the server to support the initial install you can remove it after you get past this problem.
Matt,
Have you pressed F6 when you see: "setup is inspecting your hardware"? Then loaded the RAID driver first, then press "s" to specify additional and selected the IDE driver for the CDROM? In other words I have no clue other than drivers as to why your system is doing that, try a different set of media to see if the NT4 disks were defective.
Thanks for the information - We thought of the additional network card but the server only has Extended PCI slots ( first time I've seen these ! ) .. are you aware of an Extended PCI Network card that ships with NT4 Drivers?
This card is tested and supported in the PE2650. Filename Intel_LAN_60_NT_007.exe in the dell filelibrary for the PE2650, NT.
This driver supports the following Network Interface Cards: Intel® Pro 1000XT PCI-X 10/100/1000 Copper Gigabit Single Port Adapter Dell Part number: 1H986 Intel® Pro 1000XF PCI-X 10/100/1000 Gigabit Fiber (PCI-X) Dell Part number: 5R720 Intel® Pro100S 10/100 w/IPSec (Internet Protocol Security) Dell Part number: 8G779 Intel® Pro100+ 10/100 Dual Port Dell Part number: 9213P.
Gary, thank I fixed up the drive problems, the errors were caused bacuase the container was 'Clearing', I left it over the weekend and it work no problems.
Now I have the original problem of this thread, reading back, are you saying that I cannot install NT4 as a DC if I have not bought this additional NIC ?
What I am saying is that you cannot install as a BACKUP Domain controller, because you have to have network connectivity while at SP0 in order to copy the domain schema from the Primary Domain Controller, and the embedded broadcom will not work correctly till SP3. The broadcom drivers were developed with NT 4.0 server SP3 as the baseline.
Our fee for assistance operating systems engineers may have a fix for this that does not require the additional card. I was just giving you an easy way around the problem.
Many thanks - bought the Intel Card you suggested - fitted it - and got NT 4 installed as a BDC. Updated NT4 to SP6a, installed the correct drivers for the Broadcoms and life is good - all is working well.
We also have a dual port intel that will work. I'm working from the recommended spares that our engineering have passed as approved replacement parts. These cards have dell supported drivers on the file library for THIS server. This is not to say that an old 980TX 3com card will not work, I just do not know if it will, and I do not have drivers for it in this server.
I am installing a 2650 with NT 4.0 Server. I have put the Intel Pro 1000 Card in the Server from a (Dell Power Edge 1750). But when I install the OS it is not recognized. I have checked the system BIOS and I am sure that there is nothing there that needs to be changed in order to make it recognize the card. I check the PCIX area and all it says is empty. I have also tried a Net Gear Card and have recieved similiar results (The NT Drivers were recognized by the Install both times.
I install BDC's using the built in broadcomm NIC's on the 2650's all the time. You dont need to buy a special NIC card.
Using DSA you can do this as well, it replaces the HAL with the SP3 HAL to make this work, by design. I simply wrote an unattended install that uses the oemsteup.inf and the txtsetup.sif from the DSA CD which also works fine.... with the built in NIC's. Deployed over 40 BDC's this way on 2650's.
I will also be setting up a PE2650 as a BDC. Is there any specific version of the DSA required? This will be only my second time installing on Dell hardware so bear with me and perhaps you can explain the steps you took to complete the install
Will a Intel Pro 100S Desktop adapter work as well? I have these handy and I would like to know if these will work otherwise I will have to get the Pro 100 S Server adapter.

I also have a 2650 with PERC3/DI and I want to install NT4.
I can get setup to recognise only 8033mb of 100mb, this is ok, I'm going to upgrade it later anyway.
But after creating a 4000mb partition and fomatting as ntfs, setup says it has performed a maintenance operation and I need to reboot.
When I reboot I have to go though it all again, round and round we go, never getting any further.
Can someone please help me ?
please.

Gary, I did understand the DC / Nic / SP3 issue, I just wanted to know if this Nic you suggested was the only card I could use.
