EFD support for Clariion CX4-120
Hi,
I've got a customer with an CX4-120 / Flare 4.28.000.5.706 and he asked me to find out if it is possible to use EFD / Fast cache with his array.
CXP doesn't offer a config possibility anymore for the CX4 range. So far I only managed to find an .xls file with part number for the CX4 field upgrade. This does mention both EFD's and special Fast cache drives:
FLCXAF04-100U 100GB FLASH DRIVE FOR CX4 FAST CACHE UPGRADE RW configuration mode is recommended. See configurator for supported drive configurations and limits.
CX-AF04-100U 100GB Enterprise Flash Drive
CX-AF04-200U 200GB Enterprise Flash Drive
What I'm looking for is the do and dont's reagardng this array and flash. As a EMC partner we sell lots of VNX's but other then a performance check and/or migration I've never came across a Clariion. So please feel free to add in anything I've missed with the above.

FAST Cache is supported for FLARE release 30 and above only. Here you have FLARE release 28 only, which will require an upgrade.
Please go through the FAST cache white paper (link below). you may also refer to the primus solutions emc307029 and emc260951.

Thanks Christopher,
Are the limitations the same when I will just use EFD's for a LUN and not for fast cache?

Daan,
Refer to the following KB articles:
1) emc307029: "FAST Cache RAID type and number of Enterprise Flash Drives (EFDs) supported for VNX and CLARiiON CX4"
You will notice the following requirements:
1) FLARE 30 (so upgrade required first)
2) FAST Cache enabler
3) You'll also see the following chart related to the CX4-120
RAID Type
EFDs in FAST Cache
2) emc251589: "FAST Cache configuration best practices"

Also, in reference to supported disks(including EFD's) and the required FLARE OE, always refer to the latest "Disk and FLARE OE Matrix" for the generation of array. For instance, for the CX4 the document is:
CX4 Storage Systems Disk and FLARE OE Matrix
Search for it by name on support.emc.com. I'm not a fan of putting direct links in the forums as they may go stale later.

When using them for pools or traditional RAID Groups, the stated maximum for CX-120 is 60
