Thanks for the reply. Sorry for the typo. I was supposed to mention VNX 5300 DPE.  I just came across some information about the different types of SSD and the different  types SAS drives. Since we are thinking of Tiering apps..any recommendation would be helpful.

Actually there is no VNX 5300e – there is a VNX 5300 and there are VNXe 3100/3300 – which are quite different systems

In terms of disks you don’t have a choice of vendors – only a choice of size

Thanks for your responses. Actually what i meant was when i go for an SSD drive since SSD comes as three types

: single-layer cell (SLC), multi-layer cell (MLC) and enterprise multi-layer cell (eMLC), would i need to be particular with the vendor about this.

Was the FAST Cache and FAST, EMC specifi technologies?

Thanks!

Thanks!

General recommendation is to first use some Flash for FAST Cache – then use them in the FAST VP tiering

Of course it depends on your applications, workload and budget

I suggest you talk to your EMC or partner technical contact to get a proper sizing done

You can use the EFD drives as a tier, but you can also use it for cache. the thing about FAST versus FAST Cache is that FAST moves 1GB chuncks around during scheduled hours and data which sits on SATA during the day will remain there during the day, so it will stay slower than data on SAS or EFD. Consider using FAST Cache to speed up this slow data, but I think the 5300 will not allow you to do so. You'll need at least a 5500 to be able to combine FAST and  FAST Cache.

You can only use them once. I mean, when you created a FAST Cache set of EFDs, they’re in use for that, you cannot use them for FAST as well then

Currently we only sell SLC enterprise class SSD drives for the VNX

OPTIONAL SPS FOR VNX 51/53 -- is the standby power supply comes with the VNX ( provides power for vaulting in case of power failure). There will be 2 SPS which works in redundancy.

FAST SUITE FOR VNX5300-- is the license enabler suite for FAST VP and FAST cache

What is your query on SAS drives ?

FAST suite also includes Unisphere Analyzer and Unisphere QoS Manager.

So there are SLC class SSD drives in the VNX. How about the SAS drives?

The vendor has quoted for

OPTIONAL SPS FOR VNX 51/53- what does this mean?

FAST SUITE FOR VNX5300- Is this the suite that includes Fast Cache and Fast VP? Is this a seperate product and not sold with the SAN?

Thanks!

Thanks for clearing my queries, Vipin. I have a few more queries.

1) OPTIONAL SPS FOR VNX 51/53 -- is the standby power supply comes with the VNX ( provides power for vaulting in case of power failure). There will be 2 SPS which works in redundancy- So  does mean the the VNX 5300 comes with one power supply and i need to purchase seperate if i need an additional one for redundancy?

2) For SAS drive- would i need to for a mix of SAS drives and NL-SAS drives? What would be the recommended approach for tiering applications

3) Would it make sense in going for a 25 disk module in the Disk Array enclosure instead of a 15 disk module for future expansion?

4) How many Disk Array enclosures can be connected to the VNX5300?

5) Do i get 125 disk drives with the Disk Processor Enclosure itself?

6) Also what exactly is the function of  Data Mover Enclosure if i go for a Unified option?

7) The Quad port 6GB 4port SAS i/o module -  is this to connect to another Disk enclosure? ( what does it mean by  used for back end connectivity and not supported for host connectivity)

Also there was a mention that the VNX5300 does that support additional SAS modules- What do i loose because of this? Not clear about it.

Thanks!

I

Frankly, IMHO – if your supplier cant answer these questions then you should look for a different one
