No rolling update from 7.0.2?  Seriously?

Ed.Wilts:

Rolling upgrades are only available in OneFS between versions whose third or fourth digits differ. Thus, 7.0.2.1 can rolling upgrade to 7.0.2.4, or to any eventual 7.0.3 or 7.0.4 version, but as soon as the second digit increments, the versions are no longer rolling upgrade compatible.

A simultaneous upgrade from 7.0.2 to 7.1 will involve a short period of data unavailability as the nodes reboot, but the process should be quick and painless otherwise, as there is no file system upgrade or data restripe needed between those versions.

In a production environment, this is absolutely unacceptable.  There's no such thing as a "short period of data unavailability" because this means that clients will fail.  For some customers, that's a multi-day outage as long-running jobs fail.

From what I have heard, 7.1 was announced but isn't actually available yet. Wait a couple of weeks for it to be GA...

For now the process to get 7.1 is here in  KB172492 and yes I do believe there are plans to make it available through the web channel, However I do not have a timeline.

It is GA, you just have to request it.

Thank you Christopher, do you know if 6.5.5.x virtual node will ever make it to support.emc.com as well ?

Sorry for the delay Dynamox.

As seen in the list, it wasn't until v7.0.2.1 that the virtual clusters have been made freely available for registered users on support.emc.com.  You may already know, but the reason for this is due to the timing of the presentation of the "Software License and Maintenance Agreement" and subsequent acceptance of the EULA which appears immediately after you select: "Create a new cluster" at the initial setup wizard.  This wasn't (and still isn't) the case with any version of OneFS prior to v7.0.2.1.

afaik, there is aren't any plans to back-port this "feature" to v6.5.5 (let alone v7.0.1.x or lower in the Mavericks branch).  However, knowing that you already have obtained a copy of v6.5.5 (great blog post btw), you only need to continue to ask your account rep for a copy.  As I understand it there may be some paperwork (NDA?) to sign.

hi there ,,,

OneFS upgrade will involve node reboot, means no online upgrade . right ?

Will this be same for  minor code (third or fourth digits in the code ) as well ?

thanks

Hi Ayas,

Minor code supports rolling upgrade, a rolling upgrade individually upgrades and restarts each nodes in the cluster sequentially. During a rolling upgrade, the cluster remains online and continues serving data to clients with no interruption in service. A rolling upgrade can only be performed within a OneFS code version family and not between OneFS major code version revisions. However, rolling upgrades spend a great deal of time upgrading the node, not everyone like rolling upgrade.

let's be more transparent and specific here. NFS clients will remain connected, CIFS clients WILL get disconnected.
