[Windows 2012/SQL Server 2016] Setup Avamar AlwaysOn AG on Windows Core

All,

We are using Avamar to backup our Windows Server 2012 with SQL Server 2016 servers. Our SQL Servers are Windows Core servers, no GUI installed on it.

AlwaysOn Availability Groups are implemented too, but here, we are getting a problem. Windows Failover Clusters are created after the individual nodes (with their backup solution) have been created.

What we are looking for now, is how to implement Avamar backups on our Windows Failover Clusters.

Is this possible without a GUI? If so: how?

How do we need to reconfigure our SQL Server backups and restores? They need to be made 'AlwaysOn-aware' too.

Please help if you have any guidance on this.

Thanks in advance.

Hello hello... Anybody out there?

To me, it is a bit concerning that there is so little information about Avamar SQL Server AlwaysOn Availability Groups. In the very near future, the GUI will be abandoned on MS SQL Servers. Yet, no one seems to be able to answer my questions with regards to Installing and Configuring Avamar on a Windows Core SQL Server AlwaysOn Availability Group configuration.

Has anyone in the community an opinion on this?

Hi,

You have asked a very nice query here. Avamar Backup configuration for CORE installation is very rare. I have never installed and configured Avamar on Windows Core server. Though I have configured Backup of Active Active, Active Passive and AlwaysOn SQL cluster backup many times.

If you look into following guide, you will find instructions to install and register the Avamar client on a CORE server.

https://support.emc.com/docu81579_Avamar-7.4-and-Service-Packs-for-Windows-Server-User-Guide.pdf?language=en_US

This document also contains the instructions to run Avamar cluster configuration tool using CMD.

I believe once you run the Avamar cluster configuration tool, you should be provided with options to select cluster type which can be Window cluster, SQL cluster or AlwaysOn cluster.

Hopefully you can follow below document, page 50, to configure backup later-

https://support.emc.com/docu87661_Avamar-7.5.1-for-SQL-Server-User-Guide.pdf?language=en_US

Let us know how it goes.

Hello,

when I read the first document, I can indeed see that Windows Core is supported by Avamar 7.4 for Windows Server.

But reading from page 50 in the second document, I read that the Cluster Configuration Tool can be started by opening the Start screen, and select Cluster Configuration Tool. This applies to a server with a GUI on it, not to a Windows Core server.

So my question remains: how can I configure my SQL Server AlwaysOn Availability Groups backup on a Windows Core server? There is no GUI available!

Regards,

Cornelis

I know second document does not have steps to configure SQL AlwaysOn backup.

I am suggesting to use first document for Avamar installation and registration. Also, there are steps in first document to run Avamar cluster configuration tool on a CORE server.

Now use second document as a reference to proceed. Second document has steps for GUI. I believe once you start Avamar cluster configuration tool on a CORE server, you can proceed to each next step by following the second document.

Hope it helps.
