Anyone have problems trying to update the free version of SAS to .1040?

I launched my current version and was offered the update which I allowed. It appeared to download, but I couldn't find the downloaded file on my HDD. I clicked the same shortcut I just used for SAS to start over but it said the file linked by the shortcut doesn't exist.

Went to their website and downloaded/saved the file where I could find it. But when I launched it (no other apps open), it said "Expand failed" and aborted. And now the shortcut is gone too.

Ron,

Here's the way it (generally) works for me:

First, stress that I only use SAS on-demand (meaning it's not running continually).

When I click on the SAS icon to launch it, if there's an update available, I am greeted with a small popup in the lower right, indicating that a new program version is available, and if I want, I can click on the link there to update it.   When I do so, it takes a very short time for the program to update itself, and automatically re-launch.   Given the speed of the operation, I believe it only downloads a tiny update file (to a temp location) [rather than the entire program to a "regular" location].

Having said that, I did have an unusual experience this time on my (ancient) XP system.   After clicking to allow the update, I did not see the running program "disappear" (and re-launch).   It looked like nothing happened, and the old program was still running.   So I closed it down, and re-opened it, to then see that the new version was indeed there.

I only  use SAS on demand too. And it sounds like your XP experience was somewhat similar to mine with Win 7.

The version of SAS open on my PC never closed. A couple of min after accepting the update, I closed SAS and tried to re-launch but my SAS shortcut on the Start menu didn't work, and if the new version got installed, it didn't create a desktop shortcut like it normally does.

So I ran Revo Uninstaller to uninstall SAS and try a clean install, but Revo didn't find it. That's when I went to their website to download the free version directly. But when I launched it the "failed to expand" error message appeared.

So I gave up...
