Notification from Dell Update: The system has been updated

New Dell XPS 15 running Windows 10.  I've had this computer for 4 days and I get a notification from Dell Update that the system has been updated every time I restart the system.  When I go into Dell Update, it indicates that the last update was 3 days ago.

1.  Is it normal that I get this notification upon every system restart?  Does it actually mean that the system is up-to-date?

2.  While Dell Update software does show what updates have been done to the system and the version number, it doesn't get any more info, e.g. data/time that update was applied, or summary notes of the update.

I have the Alienware SupportAssist version and it's been happening to my machine for a few days as well, even as of today. The SupportAssist version is 3.4.0.200 - it says it is the latest version. While I'm not glad this is happening to others, I'm happy to see it's not a failed update, at least

Well, I just got an "Updated" message, hours after I re-started after installing DCU v3.0.  If I get it again, I'll just uninstall and reinstall periodically, per @decker12

I've been getting this message for about a week. I've read through all the posts on here. But I'm not sure if I've got DCU; is that possible. I know I have Dell Support assistant. Even though I'm in my 70s I can usually find my way around these things. I'm on a Dell XPS laptop with Windows 10.

Just in case it may help - As I wrote in a previous input to this discussion, on my XPS 13 9360 running Windows 10, now 1909 version,  I am not receiving anomalous messages "the system has been updated" from the the Dell Update . I had uninstalled long time ago the Dell SupportAssist which seemed to me to create CPU load issues, I have kept  installed according to the windows programs list only the Dell Help and Support (version 2.6.1.0), and the Dell Update, now in version 3.1.0. Strange enough a version 3.1.0 is not listed any longer in the dell  drivers download site for the XPS 13 9360 (?)

I had installed this new version of the Dell Update on 28 Nov, never got any anomalous message out of it, so far.

@MarlinGolden39A thanks for testing this. Has the message appeared again since your last update on the 1st?

I'll drop you a private message to get some more in depth details if you don't mind.

Thanks, Alan

@FreshWest that's interesting as I understand that this is a system notification rather than an application specific notification.

The easiest way to check if you have the application is to click on the Start Button and then type "Command Update". If you have it installed it should populate in the applications list like this image.png

Do you have command update installed on the system?

@Dell-Alan DI've replied to your private message.  Thank you.

I ran DCU 3.0 this morning and noticed that it reports, incorrectly, that I've never checked for updates.  I then manually checked for updates, it reported there were none.  It did not update the last time I checked, and still reports that I have never checked.  Then I rebooted and got the errant "System Updated" message.

Bottom line:  DCU 3.0 doesn't work either.

Unless this gets fixed, I'll just uninstall 3.0 and install 3.1 (or whatever the current version is) from time to time to check for updates.

First my complaint, both Dell on twitter, and dell support via email tell me I need to renew my service plan if I want this fixed.  One of the bozos acknowledged this was dell software that caused it, and still told me I needed to renew my service plan if I wanted it fixed.

AND WHAT WE ALL KNOW IS THAT I COULD RENEW MY SERVICE PLAN AND DELL STILL WOULD NOT FIX THIS.

This is incident, repeated hundreds of times is why we all hate Dell.

IF DELL ACKNOWLEDGES THEIR SOFTWARE DID THIS, THEN DELL NEEDS TO FIX IT, REGARDLESS OF WARRANTY STATUS.

I am seeing this on Win 10 Pro, Build 18632.19h1_release.190318-1202

Using what seems to be Support Assist from 12/26/2019 and Dell Update from 12/18/2019

Run Support Assist / "Get Drivers & Dwnloads", WATCH AS:

1. Checking for Updates

2. Validating result...

3. An unexpected error occurred.

@MarlinGolden39A that's strange that it's also happening with 3.0. It's also strange that the tool doesn't acknowledge the previous scans and updates.

Can any other users confirm if the issue is also seen on version 3.0?

Just adding my voice to the masses. XPS 9360 out of warranty started a couple of weeks ago, every time I restart/start system, get update message,  very annoying. Will hold out before uninstalling.

Firstly, am I the only one to notice that the posts in this thread seem to (a) repeat themselves and (b) appear in a totally random time order?

Secondly, there seems to be a difference of opinion regarding the actual piece of software which is at fault. Is it "Dell Command Update", which I don't have on my system, or "Dell Update", which I do?

Thirdly, is anyone going to fix this board so that PNG images will display correctly? They are accepted by the uploader during posting, and then sadly fail to display?

@Antient I can't say I had seen any issues with posts posted in random order or repeating themself apart from posts marked as a solution. It may be worth checking your preferences under your settings to see if that makes a difference.

Dell Update and Command | Update are consumer and commercial version of the same software. Dell Update is primarily for consumer systems i.e Vostro, Inspiron, XPS and Alienware. Command | Update is for the commercial systems i.e Latitude , Optiplex, Precision and XPS.

As I understand it .png files have to be sent for approval before they are displayed.

Can I ask what model of system you have and confirm the issue is with Dell Update.

@Dell-Alan D Thank you for your response.

I have an Inspiron 7570 running Windows 10 Version 1909.

The software causing the problem for me is Dell Update Version 3.1.

I have attached a screen shot which you will hopefully be able to see.

Capture.JPG

It show a time and date of last update of 06:02 on 28/12/2019 (28th December) and a time and date of last check slightly over a month earlier than that of 08:38 on 26/11/2019 (26th November). The time and date of last check never varies, no matter how many automatic or manual runs of Dell Update have occured since the last update.

As a (retired) IT systems professional I believe the explanation of the problem is there in plain sight.  I am assuming that when Dell Update runs at reboot it compares the two times and dates, and if the time and date of updating is more recent than the time and date of checking it will throw up a notification that says "The system has been updated". If the time and date of checking never changes (which it doesn't, even after running a manual check) then that notification will be thrown up every time, and that is what everyone is complaining about.

If the software maintainers were to look for the reason why the time and date of the last check never changes, they'd have a fairly simple solution to this problem, wouldn't they?

Hi,

I'm yet to receive an update from our product engineering team for the request raised on the further action. I request you to please wait for another 1 to 2 business days and I will get in touch with you on the update.

@Antient thanks for picking up on that, that's really helpful. Hopefully it is something as simple as that date anomaly. As my colleagues from DELLCares have mentioned, engineering are investigating the issue. I'll pass on that additional info.
