XPS 13 9300 thunderbolt 3 issue

Hi, I have bought the new XPS 13 9300 and I wanted to connect it to my ultrawide monitor. I have tried 3 different ways: usb-c, thunderbolt (my monitor has a tb3 input) and through a TB dock. In all 3 ways the laptop would start and stop charging frequently and also disconnect from the external monitor. What I noticed is that this problem would go away as soon as I plug in the charger. Which shouldn't be the case as my monitor as well as the dock provide 85w. What could be the problem? I am going crazy as this was the reason to buy the XPS

I have had a lot of similar problems with my XPS 13 9300 connecting to external screens. First problems to connect and then going black after a few minutes. I've tried 4 different docks and many different ways of connecting the screens without success. Everything is working perfectly fine with my older XPS 9370.

Hi @RobSkipworth, I have the same exact monitor and just ordered the XPS 9300 (currently being shipped). Did you manage to solve the problem or did you return the laptop in the end? If the laptop cannot display and charge through the same port and cable that makes it DOA for me.

@saswett

Afraid it's a problem when connecting to Samsung monitors too - so not an LG issue.

Can you believe I've 5 XPS 13 in the house (three previous version 9370 and a a couple of my real old ones) - all work fine with all monitors in the house on USB-C -  for charging via the monitor and monitor signal. Not the 9300 though...

I'll be returning mine once we're out of lockdown here in Spain too. Having to use an adaptor to HDMI and that means I'm having to charge via the right-hand USB-C meaning I have to charge for a while the swap out for my USB-C camera for conference calls and then back again to charge...

Dell 9300 External Monitor problem – and maybe an indication of a more grave Thunderbolt issue on the new XPS13 and XPS15…

Can you believe I've 5 old XPS 13 in the house (three previous version 9370 and a couple of older ones) - all work fine with all monitors in the house on USB-C - for charging via the monitor and monitor signal. Not the 9300 though... exactly the same Samsung Thunderbolt monitors and LG too.

I'll be returning mine once we're out of lockdown here in Spain too. Having to use an adaptor to HDMI and that means I'm having to charge via the right-hand USB-C meaning I have to charge for a while the swap out for my USB-C camera for conference calls and then back again to charge...

I’ve seen lots of report of problems with the Thunderbolt on this model – and maybe the 15 inch too..

Some have said the monitor works as long as the power is on to the laptop (so you’d have to power using the only other USB-C Port!!)

Monitors: 34wk95u and the SAMSUNG C34J791 and, again, these work with the last two generations of XPS13.

Having same issue with XPS 13 9300 (BIOS version 1.0.11) + LG 34WK95U-W (85W PD)

Works good with second charger connected, but 1 cable connection leads to regular connect/disconnect.

My old XPS 13 9350 works smoothly with the same display

I'm chiming in to say I'm having the same issue as well. 2 months of ownership on my 7th Dell now, all of them have display issues. My XPS 9300 won't output to a second display (Tried Samsung 27", Sceptre 27" and LG 32"), but my 9370 and 9380 both have no issues displaying to the same monitors. The ONLY monitor it will correctly display externally is a Dell U3219. All drivers/bios are up to date as of today.

So what is the current status?

I've got 4k monitor which is pretty much unusable for me right now.

It works well even with £400 dell inspirion, but cannot make it work with xps.

Should I just check for bios upgrade with no ETA on it?
This is large issue DELL, I am utterly frustrated

Is there a fix already?

The second display (Dell P2412H) connected via WD15 is always a hit and miss with my 9300.

Have to plug in plug out a few times every time I wakes the machine up or switch it on to get the display working.

Just to add my voice, I have the same issue. I contacted Dell support several weeks ago, but so far no resolution. The symptoms are identical to those described by others - a constant  connect/disconnect cycle, which occasionally stabilises for a time but when it does so, it does not charge. All works fine when the Dell charger is connected to the other thunderbolt port. I am using an LG ultrawide, it works fine with a cheaper Dell latitude laptop.

Having the same (or similar) issue with the Hyperdrive Gen 2 (just got it from Hyper via Kickstarter). Laptop has latest 1.1.0 bios. I have an LG 4K screen that works fine with USB-C (directly attached to laptop) but trying to use the Hyperdrive as a Dock neither HDMI (there are two) or the Displayport output will work (at all). Monitor 'connects' in that it shows up in windows but it is shown as a tiny screen on the display preferences screen and doesn't actually output anything. The same display works fine (4K @ 60hz) with USB-C -- but this requires two cables and defeats the purpose of the 'dock'. Oddly, an Apple HDMI dongle works fine (USB-C to HDMI, USB 3.0 & USB-C power pass through -- I didn't connect power). When using that I can get 4k60hz over the HDMI connection.
