Dell R730: USB/Optical disk Connection
Hi Team,
I have Xeon 64gb RAM Dell R730 6TB HDD server in my production environment. ESXi-6.5.0-4564106-standard (VMware, Inc.) hosted into it and few VMs created under the ESXi. Now I need to transfer few files(backup file of a vm) from the ESXi to an external USB/Optical drive.
I know that few USB ports are there in the server, Can I directly plug the USB into the port, will the server recognise? can you please share the workaround to copy the file?.
Manythanks,
Linu

You can connect USB drive to front or rear USB port of the server and ESX should be able to detect it. Please ensure these ports are enabled in BIOS as these ports can be enabled/disabled in BIOS.

Thanks shine.
just to clarify, If I connected a usb , will it shows as a new partition. When I access remotely can I do a SCP for copying or I should access through console, then also can I able to copy from ESXI.

Yes. USB drive will be shown as a device in ESXi. You can SSH to ESXI and mount the device and start using it to copy required data.

Hi,
How do we confirm that the usb ports are enabled(server is in remote site, planned to complete the activity in one go), If not enable how to enable it?
Thanks,
Linu

We can't shutdown the server as this is in production, do we have any option to check the usb port status when the server is running?

I don't want to migrate the vm to a USB or add additional harddisk for a vm instance.
I need to copy few files(Backup file of a vm stored in ESXi) from the Dell server.
So I need to know how do I confirm the USB port is enabled and if not how to enble it?
Thanks,
Linu

You can check, if the USB ports are enabled, in the BIOS. But you need to restart the system for this.
In the System Setup [F2] Main Menu, click System BIOS > Integrated Devices:

If you have access to iDRAC you can SSH to iDRAC IP and run below command to check USB setting on BIOS
racadm get bios.IntegratedDevices
"UsbPorts" attribute of the output will give the setting

Thanks @DELL-Shine K!
I just tested it, looks good:
In my test system it shows AllOn.
Ok, Linu, check it this way.

I'm afraid, but no, there is no such option in iDRAC.
You have to be physically at the machine or a restart is needed to check it remotely.
Even if you have to enable them, you have to enter the system BIOS, at this point, the restart is definitely needed.

radadm is not recognised by ther server.
Also while I am connecting usb, to the server it should visible under"/dev/disks" right, will I able to open the usb using cd command and able to copy files from vmfs directory using scp command.
As of now I can't open any drives under "/dev/disks", Please see the attached image below,
