Help with multiple popups

Every time I start my PC I get one or more of the following:

Lookingforlinks
galaxysearch
seekclick

I have run Ad-aware in the safe mode and cleared my IE file, but the popups continue.

I don't know if it is important, but I am a Dell customer with 2 PCs

Thanks for looking  at my attached log

adavej,

Ok, there's seems to be quite a few problems in there to fix. But before I can post a solution for you, I need to see a log from the newest version of HiJackThis; version 1.98.2. The new version will pick up alot of things the older versions do not.

Post a new log back, and i'll review it for you.

Mike.

adavej,

Let's do some things in the meantime...

Go to www.trendmicro.com and click " Free Online Scan". It'll take a few minutes to download and install. When it's done, select all available drives, then click " Scan". This will often pick up some things that Norton's and McAfee will miss.

Also try Spybot S&D; version 1.3. Be sure to check for any updates, and install them if available. Then click " Check for Problems"; this program is free to use.

Be sure to post back a new log.

Mike.

Hi Jamez and Mike,   I have done all as instructed.

Housecall by Trendmicro found virus - troj siboco b and I deleted it.

Trust Av web did not run.

I deleted all reference to quickbrowser.

I did not get a popup when I rebooted, but would appreciate your review of the attached log as you indicated there were other issues.

Thanks in advance,  Dave

adavej,

I was hoping the online scans would've removed alot more. Be sure to read this entire solution before beginning. There's a few programs that i'm not familar with, and i'll need you to cofirm whether they need to be removed; i've included them in the solution just in case you do.

First, Let's check " Add/Remove programs" for any entry(s) that we can remove(un-install), if present:

  • SideFind
  • SearchFast

While you there, if you see any other entry(s) including ' search' or ' toolbar', and you don't recognize it, nor intentionally installed it, remove it. Just be careful not to remove (un-install) any hot-fixes or system software.

These following item(s), i'm not sure about, so i'll leave them upto you. If you know what they are, and directly installed them on your pc, keep them,  otherwise, consider having HiJackThis 'fix' the entry(s):

  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\Tracker.exe
  • C:\WINDOWS\System32\GEARSec.exe

The solution below, includes the above entry(s) in the 'fix'. If you no longer want this application on your computer, try to remove it using " Add/Remove programs" first.

Next, go to " Task Manager" and end the following processes, if present:

  • tsm.exe
  • ts.exe

Next off, let's do the following (unregister the following dlls) from a command line, if present:

  • regsvr32 /u srchfst.dll
  • regsvr32 /u oulkoqev.dll
  • regsvr32 /u qecdrhvq.dll

Next, run HiJackThis, click " Scan", then check(tick) the following entry(s), if present:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Tracker.exe
C:\WINDOWS\lbfkjrm..exe
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\tsa\tsm.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\The Jewett Family\Application Data\ttuh.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\l?as.exe (again I removed an s from as.exe to get this to send)
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\tsa\ts.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\GEARSec.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Gnxtx] C:\WINDOWS\system32\l?as.exe (one S removed from as.exe)

Now, with all windows closed, except HiJackThis, click 'Fix Checked'.

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view hidden and system files:

[file]  C:\WINDOWS\system32\Tracker.exe
[folder]  C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvunoqdy
(Make sure to check the contents, it should only contain randomly named files.)

[folder] C:\WINDOWS\System32\nmftiwvj
(Make sure to check the contents, it should only contain randomly named files.)

[file] C:\WINDOWS\lbfkjrm..exe
[file] C:\WINDOWS\srchupdt.exe

(You'll have to use 'search' to find this one...)

[folder] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\tsa
(Make sure to check the contents, it should cotain files like: tsm.exe, ts.exe, etc.,.)

[file] C:\Documents and Settings\The Jewett Family\Application Data\ttuh.exe

Reboot your computer normally

Finally, run " Disk Cleanup", and allow it to remove anything that it finds.

Repost a new log.

Mike.

Hi Mike,   I have completed your list and deleted everything I could find.  Attached is a new log. How does it look now.  What I want to do is, after you review, keep a clean log as a master. Then if something happens I can check a new log against the master.

Thanks for your help,  Dave

adavej,

Good work! That's looking alot better ... :smileyvery-happy:. That sounds like a good idea - i'm working on an application to do just that, to help out with reviewing hijack logs.

Ok, let's see what this program turns up: " A squared 2". If it works, that will give you:

  • AdAware SE Personal, with Add-Ons.
  • Spybot S&D
  • HouseCall
  • A squared 2
Be sure to update any trojan definitions before beginning your scan.

---

Post back the results. If it locates and removes any problems, post back a new log and we'll use hijack to remove what's left.

---

This is the entry that i'm concerned the most about:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DellCleanup] c:\DELL\WINCLEAN.EXE

Hi Mike,  I ran all the suggested software:

A2 - found 4 items

Spybot - found 6

Ad-aware  - found 18 - One of the items was related to tracker

housecall - nothing

I am amazed that these programs keep coming.

Should I remove winclean.exe?

Attached is an updated log.

adavej,

Good work! I believe we're in the clear ... :)

I was concerned about the winclean.exe entry when i'd first researched it, but I believe it's ok. There was another incident of it where, after running HouseCall, it disappeared from the task list. That led me to believe it was a problem file; since it passed both the online scan and " A squared 2", we'll leave it for now.

AdAware and Spybot might be finding cookies or cached item(s), and that might be normal during routine web browsing. Try disabling 3-rd party cookies from within " Internet Explorer" and see if that helps reduce the number of occurances.

One of the biggest problem i've noticed since becoming involved with the whole spyware/malware scene, is that one product just isn't enough, and to me that's kinda' ridiculous.

When you encounter something that one of the programs in your arsenal picks up as bad, take a few minutes to do just a little research on it, to understand how it happen to get onto your pc to begin with. That  might help you tighten down your system, preventing any further problems.

Mike.

Mike,  Thanks for your help and advise.  If you live in the Seattle are, I'll buy you  a beverage of your choice.  Take care,  Dave
