We are trying to implement image level backups for the first time at my client and one of the questions that came up was with retention. This is the first time I am getting involved with backups and nobody at the client has ever done it, so I was kind of hoping to get some insight as to how the retention period be determined. EMC told us a generic 4 week retention is common but I wanted to figure out how people went through the whole decision process.

My understanding is that if a specific VMs data is needed to be retained for lets say 1 year then that whole host's image backup needs to be retained for a year?

Any inputs are much appreciated.
