Touch Pad not working

Issue

The touchpad on my Dell Inspiron 5406 2-in-1 is not functioning. The touchpad intermittently stops working, and restarting the computer has sometimes restored functionality in the past. The current issue has persisted despite multiple troubleshooting attempts.

The Touchpad option/toggle is completely absent from Windows Settings under Bluetooth & devices.

Device Manager Findings

Under Human Interface Devices, the I2C HID Device has a yellow warning triangle and reports:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

The device's hardware IDs are:

  • ACPI\VEN_DLL&DEV_0945

  • ACPI\DLL0945

The I2C HID Device is using:

  • Driver Provider: Microsoft

  • Driver Date: 6/21/2006

  • Driver Version: 10.0.26100.8972

The Device Manager Events history repeatedly shows:

  • Device configured

  • Device not started

  • Device deleted

  • Device configured

  • Device not started

There are no resource conflicts reported under the Resources tab.

The HID-compliant mouse is present and does not have a warning triangle. There is no separate HID-compliant touch pad listed.

Intel I2C/Serial IO Controllers

Under System devices, both Intel I2C Host Controllers are present:

Intel(R) Serial IO I2C Host Controller - A0E8

  • Driver Provider: Intel Corporation

  • Driver Date: 1/19/2021

  • Driver Version: 30.100.2104.1

Intel(R) Serial IO I2C Host Controller - A0E9

  • Driver Provider: Intel Corporation

  • Driver Date: 1/19/2021

  • Driver Version: 30.100.2104.1

I downloaded and installed the Dell Intel Serial IO Driver 30.100.2104.1 A02, but it did not resolve the issue.

Troubleshooting Already Completed

I have already tried:

  • Multiple normal restarts

  • Complete power reset/power drain

  • Windows Update; no available updates

  • Dell Intel Serial IO driver installation/reinstallation

  • Uninstalling the I2C HID Device and restarting so Windows could rediscover it

  • Scanning for hardware changes

  • Windows Hardware and Devices troubleshooting

  • Booting into Safe Mode; the touchpad also does not work in Safe Mode

  • Updating the BIOS to the newest available BIOS for this Inspiron 5406 2-in-1

  • Checking BIOS for a touchpad/pointing-device setting; no touchpad option was present

  • Dell SupportAssist hardware diagnostics

Dell Diagnostic Results

The Dell hardware scan reported:

PASS:

  • Battery

  • PCI Bus

  • USB Status

  • Internal Hub

  • Fingerprint Reader

  • USB Composite

  • PCI

  • Camera

  • Bluetooth

  • Fan

  • Memory

  • CPU

  • Hard Drive

However, it reported:

PCI Status: WARNING

PCI Status Tests: DW-0 – Driver Error

BIOS

Current system:

  • Model: Dell Inspiron 5406 2n1

  • BIOS: Updated from Dell's previous version 1.35.0 (dated 2/13/2025) to the newer BIOS released 3/21/2025.

The touchpad remains nonfunctional after the BIOS update.

Requested Assistance

Because the I2C HID device continues to report Code 10 even after driver reinstallation, device removal/rediscovery, Safe Mode testing, BIOS updating, and power resets, I would like assistance determining whether this is a touchpad hardware failure, touchpad cable/connection issue, I2C communication problem, motherboard issue, or another hardware/firmware problem.

I would also appreciate guidance on whether the PCI Status DW-0 Driver Error is related to the I2C HID/touchpad failure.

I have already completed the standard Windows, driver, BIOS, Safe Mode, and power-reset troubleshooting, so I would prefer to proceed with more advanced diagnostics rather than repeating the same steps.

Before chasing any driver or hardware issues further, remove the base cover and check the condition of the  battery.  It's very common to detect the first signs of a swollen battery as touchpad or keyboard malfunctions.  If the battery is swollen, remove it and dispose of it outside your home or office immediately.  The system will function on the AC adapter until you have a chance to order a new battery.

Service manual shows the location of the battery.

OP if touchpad is not working it is more likely a hardware issue than software abnormalities in my experience with Dell laptop

Inspiron is more prone to misc hardware breakdown because of its component build quality

unfortunately replacing touchpad is technically involved.  If you can’t do it yourself better ship to Dell depot for repair
