Inspiron 1200 won't turn on

Question

I don't know what it is, but suddenly my Dell Inspiron 1200 started acting up. It shut itself off because it said 'Battery is Critically Low', even though the little battery icon on the task bar didn't warn me of that and my laptop was plugged in to the wall. Anyone else have this problem and can help?

Please give me the type of battery, how old it is, and try removing the battery and running off the wall!

Ok. I have a Rechargable Ni-MH Battery, Type P5413. I cannot find the date of the battery, but I'd say it's about 2 years old. Also, I've tried running the laptop from the outlet without the battery in it, and it still doesn nothing.

Well, you must have a problem with the wall plug or cord. You also might have a problem with the system board.

Well, I went through the procedure in the Tech section of the website to try to power up my laptop, and one of the things asked was if the light flickered or stayed on, and mine stays on, so I don't think that was it. It could be the system board (motherboard, right?) because the laptop got so hot sometimes.

What can I do if it is the motherboard?

You can see if a new power jack will solve the problem. The labor and part together will run $150 or so. If that doesn't fix it, you'll need a new board - part, about $400 + $100 or so to install. If you have to replace the board, you would probably do better to consider a new notebook, and next time get a 3-year warranty on whatever you do buy.
