"Safely Remove Hardware" message

When my E510 arrived, the 13-in-one card reader wouldn't work (it wasn't recognized). I opened the case and found that the cable had become unplugged during shipment. I plugged it in, and the card reader works fine.

However, now I have a "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the startup section of the task bar. If I click on the icon, it gives me instructions on how to "stop" the service and remove the card reader. As I want to KEEP the "service" (and card reader), how do I get rid of the icon on the task bar?

TIA,
Deke

Right click on the arrow, then left click on Customize Notifications.  Pick the Safely Remove Hardware and select Always Hide.

When you say "right click on the arrow," are you refering to the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon? I'll assume so. When I right click on the icon, it says "Safely Remove Hardware." If I then open the associated window, "Customize Notifications" doesn't appear.

Maybe there's a difference in Operating Systems? I have XP Pro, SP2.

That little icon is an arrow?  :smileyvery-happy:

No, the white arrow to the left of all the icons in the taskbar.

After rereading my original post, I HOPE I'm not confusing the matter; let me try to clarify.

The icon that I'm complaining about is titled "Safely Remove Hardware," and appears in the section of the task bar that shows icons for all the processes that are currenty running. It's the section of the taskbar that, at least in the default configuration, is on the far right.

I can't find an arrow anywhere. If I right-click the icon, a "bubble" says "Safely Remove Hardware." If I left-click that "bubble," it opens a window entitled "Safely Remove Hardware" (I knoooow, I see a trend, too).

This window is worthless, as all I can do is close the window, or "Stop" the device, which will allow me to unplug or remove the device.

So, although I'm sure it's not a huge drain on my system, I'd like to get rid of this terrorist software/icon. I do appreciate you efforts!

When I go down to the task bar, I see icons.  As I move left, they end, and I see a blue circle with a < sign in it.  That's the arrow I refer to.

Aha! I right-clicked on the taskbar, and chose "properties." Next, I enabled "Hide inactive icons," and then chose "customize." Then I was able to right-click on "Safely Remove Hardware," and select "Always Hide."

Of course all I'm doing is hiding the problem, but I guess that's all I can expect from Microsoft, eh?

    Thanks for you help!
