using another computer, need help ASAP

while switching between identities in outlook express, the system wouldn't let me - it said that i had an application open to close it and try again.  there was no application open and then if froze on me.  i shut down completely, when i started my computer again it went into super slow motion - it took about 2-3 hours just for the taskbar to show up - and then a pop-up screen showed up (symantec) and it said that something was trying to get into my system, that i was to uninstall and reinstall to correct the problem.  my problem is i can't do anything on my computer - i do not know what to do - can anyone help.  i am using my computer from work to relay this message.

    dgmoneill,

See if you can perform a repair reinstallation of Windows XP (assuming that is the operating system in use on your computer) using the procedure given here. If that works based on the strange performance you describe it would be prudent to copy all perishable data to removable media then do a clean reinstall of the operating system.

Based on other suggestions you were not able to implement. I would try to get into safemode and do a restore to a date when the machine was working.

Failing that I would clean install the operating system (booting from the CD drive) and lose everything but have an operating machine again. Besides solving your problem you would learn much about your computer in the process.

thank you for replying to my request - when you mean to reboot to the cd drive do you mean while i am in safe mode i just put my disks in the computer and let it run?  when all is done i then shut down and restart again?  and all should be okay?

Just checking. Is it possible you have 2 anti-virus (eg Norton and McAfee) programs installed and running concurrently ? If you're sure this is not the case, please ignore and my apologies for interrupting the thread.

You may also want to start the computer and use the CTRL ALT and DELETE keys to open the task manager and see if MSN Messenger is running. If it is end the task
