Black Screen after video driver installation.
Currently, my computer is unable to install any video drivers. It happened about a week or so ago, but after the window logo screen during boot up finishes, my screen goes black. I am unable to see anything at all, but i can hear the noises as though everything else is fine. I have tried reformatting and installing the drivers from the CD given to me. Everything seems to work, except when I install the ATI video drivers. Guessing that the CD may posisbly be the problem, I tried Omega Drivers, and then Dell's latest drivers. All of it to no avail. What ends up happening is the screen turning black after boot up. However, safe mode and VGA mode work perfectly fine. I am unsure what exactly is causing this, but any help towards possibly fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm having the same exact problem!!! I have the Inspiron 5150 with the Nvidia GeForceFX Go5200 video card... whenever I install the drivers for it and reboot... the screen will turn black after the initial bootup is over with. I have tried the latest video drivers, the drivers that came on the CD. Dell's tech support was of no use either. Their solution was to get the latest BIOS and chipsets (which I already had) as well as installing the newest video drivers (which I did)...
And like you said... it works fine in Safe Mode or the VGA "generic" video driver mode.
Please see this post... which describes my problem: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=insp_video&message.id=122601

2)Download the latest ati catalyst driver and unzip it to c:\ati
3)Download patjes tool (http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/)
4)remove in save modus dells ati driver and then use the driver cleaner to clean the rest
5)use patjes tool to install the catalyst on your laptop
