inspiron 5160

I have a Dell inspiron 5160 w/pentium 4  H.T.  3.2.When I power up the only thing that happens is the dell logo appears then the system freezes. What should I do to fix this problem,tried F2,F12 nothing happens.I could use all the help I can get thanx.  jaz

Reseat the RAM and verify that the LED on the AC adapter is ON before you plug in the notebook end. If it is not, replace the adapter.

Next would be to remove the hard drive - will the system POST to a boot screen? If so, try the drive again. If that doesn't do it, but the system will boot with no drive, the drive is faulty.

If none of the above checks out, you've a faulty system board.

The chipset is part of the mainboard; you'd have to replace the entire thing if it's faulty.

Given the cost ($400 or so just for the board) it may make more sense to replace the system.

Thanxs for the info,tried what you suggusted and it didn't work,do I need a new chipset or a new board

does the progress bar freeze at a particular point or does it never start at all?
