cannot ping each other on the same wireless network
I have a Dell desktop and an Inspiron both running XP and are connecting to the same wireless network through a Linksys wireless router/access point. Both machines can access internet without any problem. However, either machine cannot ping the other one. I would like to remotely desktop the desktop while I in with the notebook and file sharing, etc. But as the first step I cannot even ping the machines between the two. I just use the local IP that I found using ipconfig and ping it from the other.
I thought it could be the firewall I running on the desktop (zoneAlarm). But it remains not-ping-able after I shutdown zoneAlarm. I have not changed the router to use stacic IP yet. But that should not be the reason they cannot ping each other. What's step is missing? I have not enable the file sharing yet. But I think that is not the reason for this problem as well.
Actually I found I have a folder on my desktop that is already set to shared - ocassionally I need that from work through VPN. But that does not seem help: I still cannot ping the desktop from the notebook.
Let me restate my current system: I am using a cable modem with a wireless router with access point. Both the desktop and notebook are using wireless adapter to connect to the router. The router is setup with DHCP and the wireless network is in infrastructure mode. Both machines have no problem accessing intranet, can ping gateway 192.168.1.1). Both machines have set to be in the same workgroup. But they cannot communicate with each other (ping, \\ip-address, remote desktop access, etc).
What I am interested are: remote access to the other machine, and file sharing between the two.
I searched and read some post/help and have not yet find exactly one that matched with my specific quiestion. And some of them actually confused me more. In my case, do I need to setup ISC (internet connect sharing)? From some of the reading, it seems ISC is one that connecting to the intranet, while other machines are connecting to through ISC. I think this does not apply to my case. I just have a Linksys wireless router with access points, and both of my machines are not wired to the router, but through wireless network.
When I tried to run wireless network setup wizard, that confused me too. It instructed me to plug in the generated wireless network removable disk (really is the setupSNK.exe) to my access point first, then to other machines, then back to the desktop I run wizard: but there is no machine/USB port on my Linksys router, so I see no way to proceed the next step. I don't know whether I need to run network setup wizard or not. Since both machines already can connect to intranet through wireless, but just cannot see each other through the router.
I also have shutdown the zoneAlarm firewall, but it remains the same.

If File and Printer Sharing is not enabled on each machine, you will not be able to ping one from the other.
