My Dell 2400 is about a week old and works perfect except for my modem speed. I've done the modem diagnostics and added the +MS=V90 string. Still about 28 bps. My old computer connected at about 49 to 51 bps. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks. Jim233
I just posted a message today that sounds similar to yours...just a different model of Dell. (see post below) I got two or three options from the Dell techs but each time I went to go through the steps, I would encounter some other type of problem. Did Dell give you any suggestions? And what is the MS string you mentioned in your post?

I just purchased a new Dimension 8300 with XP and have not been able to get better than 26.4K with the modem. I always got 48K on my old Windows ME computer. Dell had me download new drivers so I have a Conexant D850 56K V.9x DFVc Modem and I dialed back my modem speed from 115, 200 to 57,600. I have talked to Dell and my ISP numerous times but to no avail. Has anyone else encountered this and know a solution? 48K is painful enough but 26.4 is killing me.
Thanks for asking about my problem. The Dell rep I talked to didn't speak English very well. I did dial the port speed back and that did't help. The string I added was +MS=V90 in the extra settings box. That didn't help either. There were about 250 viewers to the slow modem site that I viewed. Hmmmm.
try doing this... go to start> run and type in hypertrm
if it says make it your default telnet just say ok... then press ESC on the "pick an icon or name for this connection"... you will have a blank screen... you may not see what you are typing at first, but type this and press enter at the end of each line (this is going to dial the canadian weather bbs -- toll free -- and test the connection speed)... make sure you aren't on the internet or someone is on the phone line you have for your computer
it will come up and say Connect and then a number (it should connect over 30000)... if it is still connecting slow... try a new phone cord (6ft or less in length)...
Wasn't sure if you saw this message that was left on my original posting. May be the only option:
I had a problem similar to yours with my new Dell XPS that was shipped with a Broadcom v92 pci modem. The solution for me was to change modems in my new computer. Wal-Mart has one of the best modems I've ever used for about $70 - $75. It's a US Robotics Fax/Data Controller modem. You can find it here:
This modem works so well that I've purchased 4 of them, one for every computer I own. It's not a voice modem though, so if you want to use your computer as a very expensive answering machine, this modem won't work. Also, remember that just because the connection icon in the system tray says that the initial connection is 48k doesn't mean that the true downstream speed is 48k. The connection between your modem and server is constantly renegotiated while you surf, so what appears to be a fast connection, may in fact be much slower.
