danny38_61,

Be sure that both computers are on the same "workgroup".  You can find the name of the workgroup as follows: Right click on "my computer" and select Properties.  Click the tab for Computer Name.  You can change the workgroup name, if necessary, by clicking the Change button on this page.

Be sure that file and printer sharing are enabled on both computers.  Open Network Connections.  Right click on your network connection and select Properties.  File and Print sharing should be listed with a checkmark next to it.  If not, click install, select services and install the File and Printer Sharing service.

Be sure that file and printer sharing is permitted with your firewall.  If you are using the Windows firewall, click the Advanced tab for your network connection, click the settings button for Windows firewall and then the Exceptions tab.  There should be a checkmark for File and Printer Sharing.

Next, be sure that the printer which is attached to your desktop system is shared.  Under Printers in Control Panel, right click on the printer, click on Sharing, click Share This Printer and give the printer a "share name"

When all of this is verified, you can "install" the printer which is attached to your desktop computer onto your laptop system as follows:

Click Start->Run and type in \\DesktopComputerName\PrinterName  Replace DesktopComputerName with the name of your desktop computer (found in System Properties under Computer Name tab).  Replace the PrinterName with the "share name" you assigned to your printer.

Your laptop computer will then search the desktop computer for the printer and automatically install the needed drivers.  Now, you are ready to print to your printer from your laptop.

All of this assumes that both computers are using Windows XP.
