If you reformatted then you most certainly lost the drivers.  You need to install the chipset drivers before installing any other drivers.  Once the chipset drivers are installed, you need install drivers for your video adapter, audio adapter, modem, ethernet network adapter, wireless network adapter, and touchpad.  All drivers for your system can be found at:

The ethernet adapter is the Broadcom integrated controller under Network adapters.   The file you need is at:

To add to volcano's response. You do have to load the chipset first..But prior to chipset please install the dell notebook system software first and then reboot the system and then the chipset driver and reboot..after that all other drivers can be installed before a reboot. The dell notebook software supports usb ports and updates it has to be loaded this way to work properly. You can follow the rest of Steve's instructions but I noticed the dnss wasn't on his list. Steve you are wonderful and I love your responses.

Need more help again dont know where to ask  My wireless connection is working great but would like to have a modem connection in case of emergency. I downloaded the driver file R104087 and ran it but no devices show up and when I try to create a dial up connection all I get is " Unavailable - device missing" Every thing worked before I reinstalled windows XP  Thanks again

that is the correct driver. RIght-click on my computer and then left-click on manage. On the left pane left-click on device manager. Look for yellow question mark that says other devices. Let me know what it says so I can know if it is related to the modem controller. This would mean it's detecting your modem card but the drivers arent installed properly. I will respond to you after I get a response, thanks.
