wireless routers
hi was planning on buying a wireless router i have the xps m140 notebook with a wireless card and a regular compaq desktop i was wondering what router i should purchase what features to look for. i am running cable right now and want to keep the speed with both comps. thanks in advance:smileysurprised:
- I would recommend the Linksys WRT54G rather than the WRT54GS - unless you plan to add a SpeedBooster adapter to every computer on your network (including your notebook), you won't get the extra connection speeds above 54Mbps, and WRT54G is cheaper.Either WRT54G or WRT54GS will work with the majority of wireless devices, including PDA like Pocket PC and Palm, but you may have to compromise a little. For example, my Pocket PC connects at the standard 802.11g/54Mbps but I have to download the whole network to WPA-PSK TKIP encryption because it doesn't support the stronger AES encryption; the router's mixed TKIP+AES mode didn't work either.
- i am also thinking about adding my playstation 2 to the list of things to connect to my wireless router will either one of these have ethernet ports. also i seen one on the dell website i think its the dlink i624 with super g is this one any good. thanks in advance
- Most wireless routers include 4 ethernet ports so the WRT54G/GS are no exception.I heard mixed user reviews on Dlink products (then again, no product is perfect), but one thing I can say is that like SpeedBooster (or any wireless router using the "Afterburner" technology) Super G is a competing speed enhancing technology and will also require a compatible network adapter on ALL wireless network client to work, so you wont' make use of its extra speeds unless you upgrade your other wireless hardware.
