Upgrading m.2 ssd
I currently have a dell optiplex 7010 sff i513500, 32gb RAM, 256gb m.2 ssd I wanna upgrade to 1tb. I just wanted to know if the ssd can be swapped out for any other m.2 ssd I understand gen 3 or 4 because currently mine has a gen 4 inside. I don’t want to buy an ssd and have compatibility issues like I did when upgrading the ram. Thanks

gen 4 M.2 ssd would be best, but a 1 TB 2.5 sata ssd would work just as well. beware nowadays ssd price have increased significantly due to supply shortage 2/t AI.

M.2 SSDs are backwards compatible, but a previous generation like Gen 3 will run at Gen 3 speeds even if it is in a Gen 4 slot. Additionally, a Gen 4 SSD in a Gen 3 slot will run at Gen 3 speeds.
This same logic also applies to SATA Hard Drives. If you put a SATA 3 hard drive in a system that only supports SATA 2, it will run at SATA 2 speeds
You can't put DDR3 RAM sticks in a DDR4 slot but the different speeds of DDR4 will also act the same way. If a motherboard supports a specific speed of DDR4 memory and you install a stick with higher speeds, it will run at the maximum supported speed.
What compatibility issues did you have when upgrading the RAM?

I would just refer to the spec sheet for the storage specs. Storage should have less compatibility issues than memory so as long as you're going with an M.2 nvme, you should really be fine with any brand. Shouldn't really have an issue with going 2230 or 2280 either.
