We have a 1600n all-in-one networked with two computers. When we first hooked up the new printer/scanner/fax, everything worked fine. We did find that we had to close all other open programs before scanning or we would get an "error: network" message when scanning to the second computer. Now we are unable to scan to the second computer at all. We get the same message even when all the other programs are closed. The printer sees the computer, the id is displayed as an option. The computer sees the printer, we've also checked it from that way. It prints fine, but won't scan. The other computer scans fine. We're able to scan onto the first computer and save on the hard drive of the second, because they are networked, but it's kind of a hassle.
I had the same problem until I realized that Dell misled people on this one. The Networking function works this way the Computer that is connected directly to the printer can scan using an application like paperport. The networked printers have to scan the entire flatbed and you have to work the menu functions to answer questions at the printer. This will send a TiIFF file to the computer and can be saved there. You then can do whatever you want to the image. It would have been nice of Dell to tell people that up front. I spent over 20 hours on the phone with Dell support and they never told me.
Thanks for your response Joe, but it actually had worked in the past. We do not have any computer directly hooked up to the printer, the printer is hooked up to a hub, which is hooked to a router, which the two computers are hooked to. After about four hours on the phone with Dell support, both computer were able to receive scanned images directly from the all-in-one. We started having trouble with one of the computers and found out that by closing all the open programs on his computer, it would scan okay. However, that no longer works. Everything is closed and it still says error: network. That's what so confusing, it DID work before.
What are you scanning to on the second computer, My Documents or a folder you created? Are you sure that the file path is still correct in the program?
I do have the ids set up. I can see the second computer at the LCD at the scanner. I can even select it, but when I press enter or start scan (either one works with normally) I get the error: network message. I have no idea about the dchp or bi-directional, I don't know what those are. WHATS PAPERPORT? Boy you sure are making me feel computer illiterate, and I'm the one that's trusted to know what I'm talking about? Yikes!
As far as where I'm scanning, it WAS scanning onto the desktop (both computers). I didn't know you could change the file path. How would I do that? If the file path were changed, would it still give me an error message or would it scan into a folder somewhere?
Well it depends on what application your using on the computer your activating the scan from i use an epson stylus and whenever i hit the scan button the software pops up and asks me what i want to do and i can go into the advanced menu and send it where ever i want. I imagine Dells software has the same capability you proably just have to poke through it.
