I am having the exact same problem, and trying to print resumes to get a job! Are you telling me this is not able to be fixed? What a rip-off!

Hey guys, just wanted to share some info...my computer was saying "paper jam" even though there was no paper jam at all. I tried everything, shaking it upside down, unplugging, etc. My husband lifted the front of the printer, moved the ink cartridge units from one side of the printer to the other (probably do this a few times) then tried it again - it worked! Apparently something was jamming the sensor, and this fixed the problem. I sure hope this works for you too!

I had a similar problem:  paper could feed through, but I would get a paper jam message.  I found a small sensor which was bent, and when I bent it back the other way, I was able to print.

Open the printer (lifting the scanner) as you would to change the ink cartridge.  If the printer were a football field, the sensor would be on the right side, forty yard-line.  It is a long, black, plastic arm that sits in a channel between two paper guides directly below the metal rod on which the cartridge slides..  When I opened my printer, the sensor was bent up and out of the channel, and was stuck on top of the paper guide.   With tweezers, then a flathead screwdriver, I was able to gently lift the sensor up and over the edge of the paper guide, and fit it back into the channel.   The sensor is still bent--no longer centered in the channel--but it no longer blocks the movement of the ink cartridge, and I was able to print.

Since the sensor is still bent, I still get a paper jam error from time to time, but I just prop up the scanner, put some pressure on the sensor again, and it prints for me.

It was a very frustrating process to find the answer to my printer's paper jam problem, so I hope this works for you.

    Palisade!!!

I've read through a hundred posts, and yours is the one that solves the problem. They should post it as part of the FAQ and save people hours of searching.
    Many Thanks.

I can't believe you saved my printer for me - THANK YOU.

I kept getting the paper jam message and no paper was inside the printer.  I tried pushing paper through, I tried moving the cartridges back and forth, making sure the encoder strip was feeding through the cartridges, shaking the printer to see if it had anything inside.  I was ready to give up when I read your fix.  My printer is JUST out of warranty and they wanted $49.95 to TALK to a tech person.  This is a problem with these printers and Dell should do something about it.

You said that there was an arm under the silver bar.  It couldn't see anything that looked like and arm, but a little black plastic piece on the paper roller was slightly crooked, I could see that.  It was just like you said, if you were looking at a football field, on the right side 40 yard line. You wouldn't notice that anything was wrong except that it was slightly crooked.

My husband took the whole printer apart, it was tricky and I didn't think it would come apart, but when he got where he could see inside, you could see that the little black piece of plastic was really a tiny black plastic arm (1/4 inch)  that was bent up and off to the side of the paper feed.  He used tweezers and pulled it up gently and moved it to the right and then it fit down in the slot again (it isn't centered).  He put it all back together and no more paper jam message and it prints!

I was afraid he was going to break something else trying to fix it, but it seems to be ok.  I like this printer and I really didn't want to buy another one when this one is just like new.  I think my daughter may have pulled paper out from the hopper when it was trying to print.

    I hope this is helpful.

    God bless you all.

Exactly!   The paper jam sensor was bent up, causing the false jam error message, and blocking the cartridge carrier from sliding the full width.  I used tweezer to lift the sensor and put/bend it back into its slot.  Works fine now.

Dell Tech Support doesn't know anything, couldn't diagnose the problem, but this is the fix.
